04 Dec 2022Safe and direct route. Pavements at either end. The meeting point in Leek, frustratingly, is on the narrow pavement of the wrong side of a busy road, a distance from the pedestrian friendly town centre and nowhere near the bus station, nor its principle routes. I've raised this on the message board. The route out of Leek is along an old railway which makes for a dry, raised, enjoyable and relaxing walk to the cafe of the railway at Rudyard Lake. The route leaves at the station for a short walk along the pavement of Rudyard Road. The tracks into and across the countryside are hilly, but the views are rewarding. There is a little lane walking in Biddulph Moor. The walking infrastructure such as gates and stiles can be entertaining and quirky, but often in poor repair and you often have to rely on the plotting to sure where you are going. There are not many opportunities to buy food on the way. Rudyard Lake Visitor Centre is a short diversion as you come into the village. There are pubs and cafes at either end and the World Famous Poveys Oatcake Shop in Biddulph.

02 Dec 2022This was definitely a nice route, but the field crossings suffered from poor waymarking, poor quality stiles, and a lot of mud, especially around the stiles.
The first section, starting from Leek, was a very pleasant and easy former railway line. It would be easy to miss the entrance to it, which is through a cycle barrier, and down some shallow steps and under the bridge.
If needed, a diversion to Rudyard Reservoir would take you to a café and toilets by the lake itself (as per other BidLee routes). Horton Hall was a lovely grand old building on the brief road section at Horton. There were good views in the vicinity of the road crossing just east of Biddulph Moor (Top Road), including across to Mow Cop, and a bit later down into Biddulph.
