Description

This route is very green and fairly quiet, mostly following the River Cray. It goes through two large parks, several other green spaces and footpaths. Thames Road Wetland near Dartford is a remnant of the original marshy landscape and rather beautiful. You could stop off at Hall Place, a Tudor house and gardens or just buy coffee and cake. On Priory Rd in Dartford, it's free to see the old patchworked priory walls plus the gatehouse, which has a connection to Henry VIII and is now a registry office.

This route is about a mile longer than BexDar One but a lot more enjoyable. Less than half is on roads and only half of that on primary roads in 4 shortish sections, the longest less than 800m.

In Crayford there are multiple places to eat, a public toilet in the small park plus a train station and several buses. Most of the off road sections are unlit at night. There are several un-made paths which are longitudinally rutted with some muddy bits and kissing gates, and in North Hall Place up/down a fairly steep grassy slope. There is not a made path to follow through North Hall Place but there are helpful straight lines of trees to navigate by. The Halcot Ave exit is not shown on maps but it’s next to the secondary school

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A very enjoyable walk/run. The land is largely flat but views from the top of North Hall Place were good, and the River Cray was a nice companion for most of the journey. Because I was reviewing/testing different routes (before choosing this one to upload) I did this in several parts and in different directions but all on the same day, Bexleyheath to Crayford and then Dartford to Crayford.

In early November it was muddy in places, particularly between Hall Place and Crayford and then on the footpath through the wetland (Thames Rd / Maiden Lane). As well as various gates/width restrictions there are long shallow steps on the footpath near Priory Rd. That section and the riverside footpath approaching Crayford from the east are both unlit and under tree cover so the dark comes on quickly and you might want a torch at dusk (don't ask!).
