14 Sep 2021Starting from Fulwood the first 1.3 miles is on pavement along the busy A6. Negotiating the motorway junction has been made safe with pelican crossings. The real horrible section starts after this! The entrance to the footpath is blocked off, and the diversion is through a car park then towards the church, where a sign indicates the jungle that you need to bash your way through. Maybe in the winter this section would be easier, and maybe the Ramblers will take it up with the local council, but for now, expect to be stung by nettles and thistles for most of the next mile.
Surprisingly the signposting is quite good. There is a nasty road crossing of the A6 with a small island in the middle, and the traffic here tends to be quite fast. After a bit more jungle the route eventually becomes little-used field paths, towards the Italian Orchard restaurant. From here on the route is mainly farm lanes and is pleasant enough apart from the inevitable drone of the M6.
Unless the initial footpath is improved, I would suggest using Garstang Road and Whittingham Lane to reach the lane to Hoole’s Farm.
