14 May 2024I walked this route from Dronfield. From the hub at the railway station the route climbs steadily along footpaths through the housing to reach and cross the A61 by-pass and then around the edge of Dronfield Woodhouse. The path heads across fields to the south of Holmesfield to cross the B6051 at the hamlet of Millthorpe. From here an overgrown path (leading to better paths) climbs to Unthank. Here the route joins the quiet Unthank Lane for one and quarter miles and climbs steadily through the peaceful setting of Burrs Wood. Beyond the wood, the lane continues to shortly join another minor road. There is more traffic here, but still plenty of room on the verge if required. [from here to Baslow coincides with a section of the slow-way Bakche2] Our route follows this lane for another one and a quarter miles to reach the A621. There is a path along the western verge of this busy road that keeps you well away from traffic. At the junction with Clodhall Lane the route turns north on the minor road and shortly afterwards reaches the start of a bridleway that rises towards Baslow Edge. After passing Wellington's Monument the path descends towards Baslow. The choice here is whether to stick to Bakche2 (also Dronche2) or continue on Dronche1. Dronche1 passes through Baslow (with shops, teashops and pubs available) and then across the fields, crossing the busy A621, and climbing steeply to Pilsley. The next section to meet the B6048 has tricky route finding - the 1:25000 map is invaluable here (If you were walking from Bakewell, the route from Redway farm would be even harder to find. The B6048 is relatively quiet, but the route soon joins the A619. Fortunately there is a roadside pavement - although it is pretty overgrown in places. After passing the quaintly named Pineapple House farm look out for a pedestrian gate hidden in the hedge just before the bridge over the Monsal Trail. A steep path allows you to join the Monsal Trail and so towards Bakewell. A short walk on residential streets brings you to the town centre.
Although there is two and half miles of lane-walking in the middle, the traffic is light, the scenery good and progress quick. I walked the route as it was designed, but on reflection if I did it again I would divert after Baslow onto the Bakche2 / Dronche2 route through Chatsworth.
