Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

16 Nov 2021I agree with HikeBikeScotland this is a much preferable route along the sea front. There is a tricky bit around the St Nicholas Golf Course which makes it very difficult for wheeled users but the golfers were friendly.
This route starts with a lovely walk over the 500 year 'Auld Brig of Ayr' and after a little diversion through some industrial units brings you out onto the coast.
Currently (Nov 2021) there is a diversion in the industrial estate due to building works.
This route ends at the Prestwick railway station but just before be sure to stop at Mancini's ice cream parlour - voted best ice cream in the world.

23 Apr 2021I walked this route from Ayr to Prestwick and it was a very pleasant experience, much preferred to walking along the main road (A79) while still providing a direct connection between these towns and their train stations. Most of the route follows hard surfaces with a short section along a dirt promenade. There is, however, a 10-15 meter part of the route at the southern edge of the St Nicholas Golf Course that is narrow, rocky and steep, creating a barrier to wheelchairs and people with limited mobility. Further north, you'll have a choice to walk along the beach or continue on the path through the golf course to connect to Maryborough Rd. There are toilets along the promenade in Prestwick and plenty of places to rest and enjoy the views across to Arran along the way. Overall, I recommend this Slow Way.
