Description
This is a nice green and majority off road walk between Aveley and South Ockendon. It's very green and fairly untamed. There is a publicly accessible chain of greenspaces linking the two villages, including Belhus Woods (Woodland Trust) and Oak Wood (Thurrock Council), this isn't farmland, although the part through NNNN golf course is very manicured.
AveSou 3 was created because AveSou 2 is temporarily unusable through Little Belhus Country Park. Which is slowly being converted from a capped landfill site to a mix of meadows, lakes, woods and amenity grassland. The South Field would be useful to this route, but in Summer 2023 it hasn't yet been opened.
It's a short route, with no shop etc mid route. But the route does go right past the entrance to Ockendon Station, where you can use contactless or Oyster if coming from London or out to Grays even though it's outside the TfL zones. https://tinyurl.com/OysterOutsideTfL.
EnsignBus routes 22, 77 and 77A go along Elmdon Road, by the schools, with a pretty good service even on Sundays. One of the buses from the end point at Aveley is the 372, a red TfL bus so you can use contactless or Oyster again, and it'll take you to Rainham Station or Elm Park tube.
In a couple of places the path is well hidden. Mostly when it goes through the golf course on Public Footpath 140.
1) The southern entrance to the golf course at XXX is a small gap in the railings semi-blocked by a big tree stump; the public footpath sign is hidden inside the new growth from the stump. There's a much more promising path just a few metres west but it soon turns and heads west, not north.
2) Inside the golf course I only found a single short wooden post by small trees which wasn't visible until you were almost upon it. There's no flattened track or wear pattern on the grass to give you a clue about the right of way either. The line of route follows the official OS line but cuts across the fairways and follows tree lines instead of a long diagonal right through the golfers routes.
3) The northern entrance at XXXXX is a small gap between tall fence palings so close together they look like a continuous fence until you are very close. Just inside the golf course there is a tall wooden post pointing the way through, and from inside the woods an arrow sign stuck on a tree pointing down an unlikely looking side path to the unlikely looking fence/entrance.
4) The path through the small woods just north of the golf course doesn't follow the OS line, but it's easy to follow.
5) Oak Wood, eastern entrance at NNNNN. There is a deliberate space in the fence with a properly made path leading to it from within the wood. But you can't see it well from Hamble Lane. Persist, it's just there at the end of the short row of houses. This entrance is also lacking one of the You Are Here info boards either, and isn't even shown on them. Oak Wood is open to the public, owned by Thurrock Council but shown badly on maps.
I'll add some photos later which should help, and upload a marked up aerial view of a good way through the golf course, a photo of the info board at Oak Wood and the theoretical finished layout of Little Belhus Park

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Jun 2023Very nice walk and the green spaces it uses are wild, with a good mix of shade and meadows for a sunny day. The green sections take you almost into the middle of Aveley.
I figured this route out yesterday when I was testing AveSou 2 and realised it wasn't going to work. I'm only giving 4 stars because it's not as good as it will be once Little Belhus Country Park is properly open (when AveSou 2 will work). And because the golf course was badly signed and seems deliberately discouraging. That was annoying but if you know it's coming and/or have a good map or gps it's not a problem to navigate.
Will add photos later.
