Description
I created this route as part of the Route Sprint 2023, which introduced Aust (Gloucestershire) as a new Slow Ways place on the network.
The route is derived from the former Chefil2, the most popular route on the former Chepstow-Filton Slow Way, with the section from Chepstow to Aust removed (as that is now part of a new Slow Way), and with improved fidelity

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

30 Jan 2024I walked this as part of an old route that I shared from Chepstow to Filton. This has now been removed, after a change in the network, with Aust being added as a Slow Ways place. It's a good route with views across the Severn.
I walked Filton to Aust. From Filton the Slow Way makes its way out through green spaces, across a golf course and around the back of the old airport, (now being developed) through some old farm fields which look to be becoming more of a park. The route does not always exactly match the paths as shown on the ordnance survey map. The plot indicates more accurate routes of paths that were actually being used when I walked through.
Once through Catbrain, then around the edge of the monster Cribb's Causeway shopping centre and across the main road, it is all change as the Slow Way heads down into the Severn Vale. The road downhill is now a cycle route and closed to traffic most of the way. At the end of it the route reaches the levels of the Severn Vale and rakes to the fields.
Shortly after the village of Easter Compton, the Slow Way crosses the access road for The Wave (a newish surfing lake) at Washing Poll Farm. Thereafter it is almost all quiet pastures and tracks. At wet times of year you are likely to get wet feet, but I found it OK in April. Navigation is farily straightforward, although some of the old wooden infrastructure along was in need of repair and the signage isn't always perfect. At Bilsham Farm, note that the route goes around in the field to the east as the mapped path through the farmyard no longer exists.
Approaching Aust, the Slow Way goes through a new wetland which has been created as part of major flood defence works along the River Severn. There was a clear and well-signed diversion in place here which added a few hundred extra metres when I walked it, but it is quite possible that the works have finished since and that the footpath is open again. This area should become a lovely wildlife area in time. The route then arrives in Aust village via a green lane.
There is a pub in the village but no public transport (nearest easily walkable buses a couple of miles over the Severn Bridge in Chepstow, or buses and trains a few miles further west at Severn Beach - although the path there is currently blocked by the flood works).

21 Dec 2023I walked this route as part of the then slowway from Chepstow to Filton. This section of the route was very pleasant and easy to follow. It was under water in some parts particularly in and around farmland at Rookery Farm. Easter Compton has a pub and a nice place to sit and eat lunch. It is a safe and easy route to walk.
