07 Mar 2024Liked the Banksy-style wallart on a former mill building at the start. The walk - mainly along the canal towpath - was a good alternative to walking along roads. It was however a run down part of the canal with an air of dereliction. Some access issues so probably not easy for wheelchairs/pushchairs. Start is only 5 mins walk from the station so that was good. Not sure how to comment about ‘safety ‘ - it would not be my choice of route after dark.

02 Mar 2024Pleasant canal walk between Ashton and Stalybridge. The towpath is not as accessible as some - narrow in places (particularly under bridges) and some steps. Access to the towpath from the B6170 at the Ashton end can be easily missed.

20 Feb 2024Hey RGW! You should post a review! I can see that you’ve walked this as you have uploaded photos of it. It is fine, and encouraged, to review your own routes, and you’ll be able to get this one a snail, when my friend has also reviewed it!
We walked this on a dull day towards the end of a wet winter, and although there were some puddles, it was not muddy. Although this section of canal mainly passed through an industrial area, there was lots of interest. We saw some great street art, including one by Mr Eggs (Tameside’s own Banksy), and lovely old tiled pubs, as well as Ashton’s excellent market. There were also some small tunnels and an aqueduct.
Annoyingly, some parts of the towpath were accessed by shallow steps, which I guess would cause significant difficulties for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, although people with buggies would probably be okay. There was also a ramp which was a bit slippery from moss and rainwater.
A nice, largely off-road alternative route.
