Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Situated within the North Wessex AONB this is a great route for walkers, enjoying panoramic views of the Ridgeway & the Berkshire Downs, and passing close to the National Trust property of Ashdown House (no café).
From Ashbury, the route follows a footpath between the fields from behind the church up to the Ridgeway. Crossing the Ridgeway the footpath levels off, continuing alongside crop field boundaries, before dropping down to Ashdown House. From this side you get a great view of the house which is barely visible from the road between Ashbury and Lambourn. After passing the house, a short track leads to a wild flower meadow. In August this was in full bloom with the footpath narrower and not quite as easy to follow. But it was absolutely teeming with a variety of butterflies! Beyond this point, the route then follows a series of byways and crosses the gallops before meeting a no-through road that takes you down to Lambourn.
Along the whole route, the footpaths can be uneven underfoot and the byways are rutted in several places. There a couple of gates and stiles to negotiate. The no-through road has no pavement but is likely to be pretty quiet unless the horses are on their way to/from training. The final bit of road into Lambourn narrows for cars and also has no pavement – probably easier to use one of the walkways down the side of the church.
For walkers I think this is a 5* route despite no cafes/shops midway! I have knocked a star off due to accessibility issues for wheelchairs, mobility scooters.
