Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

06 Jun 2021I walked this in reverse starting at Belper. A walk of two halves. The first half is quite hilly with open aspects across meadows. There is one fairly short stretch on a busy road near Carsington Water. The second half is flatter and follows a valley floor again through meadows. An excellent lunch at the Black Swan, Idridgehay. There is also the wonderful Barley Mow just off the route at Kirk Ireton. There are more good pubs at both Ashbourne and Belper. There are regular buses from both Belper and Ashbourne to Derby. Belper also has a train station.

02 Jun 2021A good route with the exception of the very busy road South of Blackwall with no pavement. I thinking a good detour would be to take the path just before Blackwall South to Biggin and then take the path West to rejoin the route at Gibfield which avoids avoid all this road section. Great food and real Ale at the Black Swan at Idrigehay.

02 May 2021 (edited 27 Jun 2023)South of Carsington Water there is a almost certainly a better route on footpaths via Biggin to Idridgehay which avoids a lot of road. I haven't walked enough of those paths to recommend a detailed route.
