This is a lovely walk, along the Arun valley and up, over and back down the South Downs into Storrington (I actually did it in reverse, on 11/11/23).

This is a marvellous route across the top of the Downs. I would say it is best undertaken from Storrington to Arundel. This provides the silhouette of Arundel Castle ahead as an accompaniment for the second half of the walk. The final section along the levee bank of the River Arun into the town is a beautiful finale.

The route starts at the busy Storrington High Street, but the traffic noise is quickly left behind as you head out the village. The path towards the scarp of the South Downs is along the side of fields and can be muddy. There are a couple of narrow footbridges across streams. From the foot of Kithurst Hill, the route is straight up. This is a steep bostal bridleway which really tests the heart and lungs. At the top of the climb, I took a quick there-and-back detour to bag the trig point at Kithurst Hill, but that's an optional extra.

The route itself from the top of the climb now descends gently for three or four miles to the village of Burpham. There are sections straight across cultivated fields where you may be following foot or hoof prints if the field has been been newly ploughed. Just North of Wepham Down, follow the bridle path as I have traced it, as a section of bridleway marked on the OS map is no longer in use. The re-routed path is clear on the ground but a crossroad sign where five paths meet is a little confusing (see photo #9, follow the red arrow).

Burpham is a pretty and peaceful downland village with fantastic views of the Arun Valley. There is a pub, The George, for refreshments and a lovely churchyard with benches around the edge for a rest or picnic. The route out of the village follows the edge of a steep, ancient embankment or burgh dating back to the time of Alfred the Great c.890 AD.

From here, some steps marked on the map as Jacob's Ladder (photo #12) take you down to the River Arun, which is mostly followed all the way into Arundel. This section has several stiles and there is a railway level crossing (photo #14) near the end.
