Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

05 Jul 2023I walked this route in reasonable weather in October 2022 (26/10/2022), its part of the John O'Groats Trail. It was fine, pretty level, a little bit boring in fact but you moved quickly on it. It starts with a climb out of Alness (plenty of buses to Inverness or Train). There's a good accessible toilet at Alness Library near the main street. Up past the golf club and then a turn right onto the long and steady minor road that goes all the way to Tain climbing gradually most of the way. Most of it is past fields or forestry and there only a few views , just the odd car passing. The main path splits off the road for a while about a third of the way near the Moss of Barracks, this was originally woodland but as of late 2022 most of the trees had been felled and the path exposed, I stayed on the road. After the river crossing at Scotsburn the road climbs more steeply and winds up to the road junction at Lamington. There is the option here to go up into Lamington/Scotsburn woods but this looked steep and I was saving my energy so didn't follow and stayed on the road which levelled off and then started a long gradual descent into Tain. After a few more woods then fields, the route takes you to the A9 and Tain ring road bit which is a bit tricky to cross in peak traffic, after that it is a fairly short walk down the hill into the town centre. I always liked Tain, it has an old grandeur about its buildings. There are accessible public toilets in the little green area in the centre next to the council offices, there are plenty of shops here, railway station is down below, buses back to Inverness or north to Dornoch in the main street.
Total mileage, I make it 12.24 (19.7km), a little bit more than I am comfortable with but ok, just under 5 hours. Would be ok for wheels as well if you stick to the tarmac road.
Nice view from Tain at the end looking at the coast north around Golspie.
