Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

01 Jun 2022I agree with the other two reviewer's comments on this route. It's a good and direct route. It's shame it follows the busy road for so long, but at least there's a path... and the canal section is great.
I don't think this route is good enough to be in the network though. For me, while the route line is followable, it's just not accurate enough.
I'm going to share two other route options. One that is true to this route but drawn accurately. The other will got via Crosskeys station and shops.

29 Apr 2022An easy and straight forward route. At the time of the review there was a footpath closure along the canal towpath but it is easy to follow the B4591 which runs alongside it and has a pavement.

28 Apr 2022A walk of two halves really - the first part down the "old" road from Abercarn to Cwmcarn, then following the Crumlin arm of the Mon & Brec canal all the way to Risca.
Although there is a by-pass road down the valley, the old road can still be quite busy, and it`s built up and residential all the way down to Cwmcarn.
At Cwmcarn the path joins the beautiful Mon & Brec and canal, although at the time of this walk, a deviation was in place from Pontywaun to the southern end of Cross Keys, so the planned path couldn`t be followed all the way. This is a pleasant walk along the flat of the canal towpath through some lovely scenery most of the way to Risca, finishing off with a steep downhill walk into the town centre.
This route can be wheeled, but for wheelchairs, the pavements along the road section are quite narrow in places and the wheelchair crossings are not in place all the way for crossing the side streets. The canal section is easily navigable by wheelchair though.
