Description
This route includes a simplified way through Lesnes Abbey Woods with views towards East London, a reclaimed meadow at Clam Field Rec at the top of the escarpment, and a uncomplicated way through the quiet of Bexleyheath Cemetery. The long section on quiet, if rather samey, residential roads is broken up by Bexleyheath station (quite distant from Bexleyheath town centre) plus a good number of associated eateries and shops. I tested several paths up through beautiful, peaceful but steep and labyrinthine Lesnes Abbey Woods. This way has slightly gentler inclines and is pretty easy to follow. AbbBex 2 is only 150m longer than the true length of AbbBex 1, has fewer decision points, and the line through the green spaces matches paths on the ground.
If you don't want to use the small high street at Abbey Wood, it is much more straightforward to cross at the lights immediately outside the station, turn right and down the flyover for about 200m. This brings you directly to the Knee Hill entrance into Lesnes Abbey Woods.
Surrounding Lesnes Abbey Wood there are, unfortunately, motorbike restrictors (with kissing gate) as they have had significant problems in the last few years. The woods lie on the slope of tall steep hills and even the route I chose has two sharp, short inclines which are near the point where you cross into the woodland from the viewpoint on the meadow edge. There will be good bluebell displays and, possibly off route, carpets of native daffodils and white wood anemones. You'll get the best display of these to the south and east of the lodge the other side of New Road, where there is also a small kiosk for paninis and coffee.
Bexleyheath Cemetery closes pretty early. A helpful man explained he locks the Upland Rd gate at 3pm and the other two gates at 4 GMT or 6 BST. The alternative is simply Church Rd and Broadway

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. 30 Mar 2024Walked Bexleyheath to Abbey Wood, sunny Saturday.
Its a good well drawn route, mostly residential streets in a pleasant area.
There are woods and green spaces nearer to Abbey Wood, and several refreshment stops along the way.
Abbey Wood has good rail connections although they may not all be running.
The route passes Bexleyheath station; the meeting point is some distance away but with good bus links including the Super Loop bus.

24 Mar 2024I walked this on a mostly overcast afternoon, from Bexleyheath to Abbey Wood. It had rained half an hour ago.
After leaving Bexleyheath's centre (photo #1), the first part of this route is mostly along quiet residential streets (photo #3, #4), with occasional highlights such as the Bexleyheath Cemetery (photo #2). The last, much shorter part, is through the lovely woods of the former Lesnes Abbey (photo #5). After leaving it, there is a wide open view (photo #6). Then there is a busy road to cross under (photo #7) to finish at Abbey Wood station.
It's a good route, but not 5 stars as it's so residential, and I prefer more mud.

09 Mar 2023 (edited 09 Jul 2023)At the Abbey Wood end there is a lot of walking through some lovely green and wild places, then quiet residential roads punctuated by a station and some shops. Just before the Bexleyheath end you divert into a small cemetery and past a church coming out onto the high street just before the end point. I wasn't happy with the vague line that AbbBex 1 took through Lesnes Abbey Woods, which can be very disorienting even if you are following an actual path, or that it missed Bexleyheath Station when there isn't a station at Bexley town centre. After testing out some other ways I think this route balances being pleasant, quiet and easy to follow as well as anything.
Lesnes Abbey Woods is my favourite part of the walk. I love the old oak trees but unfortunately I was a bit early for the bluebells. If you keep your ears and eyes open you might see all sorts of birdlife, maybe a buzzard. At the top of the woods it loops away through a quiet grassy estate (no path on busy Knee Hill), Crossing the busy junction is simple at the lights is and the turning into Clam Fields was just past the bus stop. It's a wide meadow with a ring of mostly young woodland around, lovely when they let the grass grow long in summer and three parallel paths curve around the way you need to go. There's a small corner shop at the end if you need a pick me up. The way through to Bexleyheath is all on residential roads now, occasional glimpsed views and very quiet but it is a bit samey. Some shops around Bexleyheath Station livened things up and I was tempted by tea and cake, but wanted to complete this plus BexWoo before dark. More residential roads before turning into Bexleyheath Cemetery, a welcome green respite, but mind out for the early closing. I was reassured that if you call the number on the sign you shouldn't stay locked in for too long.
