    1. For this photo survey of the Belder 1 route, I walked the route in the Belper to Derby direction. There is a barrier in the path at the bridge over Coppice Brook in Belper. The gap between the post and the railing is about 610mm but the stone wall might make it more awkward for a wheeled device to pass through. 0.62 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    2. Photo taken part way up a series of steps in the path (about 36 steps in this flight). 0.79 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    3. Stone stile on footpath, with the opening about 170mm wide and a step-over about 400mm high. There are some eight examples of this general type of stile in the section between Bargate Lane (1.74km from Belper start) and Makeney village (3.66km from Belper). 1.89 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    4. A stony passage through a field boundary. There is a short sharp gradient of 31% at this point (uphill going towards Belper). Similar stony passages through field boundaries were seen at other places in this area. 2.07 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    5. Stones in pathway. The path near to here had a camber of 28%. 2.51 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    6. Vegetation encroaching across the path, around shoulder-high. The path was about 300mm wide by pushing aside the grass. Walking through similar long grass also took place at other places on the route, (You may wish to consider precautions against ticks). 2.57 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    7. The route crosses Shaw Lane. These steps are where the footpath from Belper (centre background) joins Shaw Lane. 2.91 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    11. After this wooden stile the route went through a field which had two horses in it. In that field there is a small white panel in the fence at the bottom of the field, which is a gate. After that gate there is another wooden stile similar to this one. 3.5 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    12. Restricted width (about 550mm) on pavement of Duffield Bank road. Dropped kerbs exist both sides of it. The road needs to be crossed at the further dropped kerb where the pavement changes sides. 5.22 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    15. Stile. Beyond here the path passes between high walls on both sides and was a little muddy underfoot (in July so might be more muddy at other times). 6.33 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    16. Post where footpath emerges onto Eaton Bank road. The through-way is about 260mm wide, and there is a step up on the ground as well. 6.57 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    18. Footpath leading off Rigga Lane. Note footpath sign on the fence post and tree roots above steps. On going up the lane from Duffield Road, the first path encountered going off to the right off the lane (at about 50m up from the road) is not the route. The correct path as seen in this photo goes off to the right further up the lane. 6.96 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    26. Looking South from Ford Lane towards the subway under the A38. The gate on the right is often closed and padlocked so is assumed not to be for public use. The small gap between the left-hand gate and the fence leads to a path going to the subway but there wasn’t a sign indicating that to be the official right of way. A shorter option is possible rather than the rather circuitous Slow Ways route from the A38 to the subway. A flight of steps goes down from the A38 pavement by a sign reading Footpath to Darley Abbey. The subway is on the left at the bottom of these steps. The steps are 100 metres along the pavement from the steps that led up onto the A38. This shorter option takes 340 metres off the Slow Ways route. Kilometres from the start mentioned in following photos are based on the full published Slow Ways route. 9.91 km from start — 09 Aug 2021

    29. Approaching Darley Abbey, please don’t go down the gravel road seen on the right of the photo, there is a locked gate across it at its far end, and it isn't a right of way. The proper route is through the footpath seen going beside the post in the left of the photo. (If the official footpath had been used up to this point, the wooden post would be approached from the left of the photo). 11.48 km from start — 09 Aug 2021
