Help connect Yoxall
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Yoxall’s Slow Ways.

Overall it's a really nice walk and takes in some rolling beautiful countryside. There aren't many other facilities on the way but it's not a long route. It was possible to stick to the hedge though and walk round given field edges were broad enough....

Would have been 4 stars without the long walk into Yoxall on the road, very busy with no pavement and some quite steep sides to the road - so no option to step out of they way of traffic, doing it again I would follow YOXBUR2 and cut off onto a less busy road and more field footpaths. But very scenic walk and for the time of year not too muddy....

There are a number of pubs on this route, including at Hill Ridware, where they serve Cantonese food....

I know from having walked sections of this route in other contexts this is the best one for views....

The plotting near Morrey is not completely clear and requires some interpretation. There are a couple of sections near Morrey that are very overgrown too. I have improved this route and submitted it as Rugyox 6...

A Fail, as the plotting fails to follow the right of way, and leads you into a field with no exit. Fixed and submitted as Rugyox 5...

We walk a short distance along the quiet Main Road then take the little used field path right, which crosses fields largely unmarked but the stiles are all fine apart from the last one down to Morrey Lane which requires a degree of agility that was almost beyond me. Beyond we follow the edge of an open arable field, where there is no real path until we reach the lane which takes us through a little wood, beyond which the lane turns left and our route crosses two more fields (again few if any traces of a path) to reach Orange Lane. The next field, which surrounds Sunnyside farm, was open pasture, and I chose to follow a quite well trodden shortcut path around the right hand edge rather than approach the farm buildings. Beyond we cross another large open field, go left a short distance along a lane (not north of it as the OS map) then go right along field edges and over more stiles then left a little to reach Ashbrook Lane....

The little path down to the old bridge could easily be missed, but it was a welcome break from the main road. Bondfield Lane is easily reached and we go straight on most of the way to Main Road then right along a well used path that leads through a park to Yoxall, where we go straight on to the main road and follow it left to the rather poorly sited meeting point at the entrance to the church (no seats and no bus stops, but there are both a little further south)....

It's a short walk from the poorly sited meeting spot in a pub car park, away from the bus route. The walk through Hamstall Ridware, which has a pub, is along a lane which is relatively open, but is often used by cars and requires caution. The cross country section from Hamstall Hall, crossing the River Blythe was my favourite section of the walk, the only truly relaxing section, helped by a docile herd of cattle....

The route leaves Yoxall passing the village shop and The Crown Inn where the bus stops are located. A footpath leaves the bridleway making a more direct route to Gilleon's Hall around the edge of a field of tall bright yellow oil seed. From here the plan had been to continue north passing The Clump but that proved impossible so I offer a quiet road route which may come as a relieve. Turning north across fields again towards Sunnyside it may be better to follow the field edge to pick up the path heading due north where I met the route in Abbyox-1....

A thoroughly enjoyable Slow Way comprising of countryside walking, a small section of road, a park, and canal towpath into Burton. The Yoxall end starts well, using the National Forest Way and a series of paths to bypass a highly dangerous section of the B5016....

A good country walk so, mud, stiles, sheep perhaps cattle and deer. The path climbs moving into a ploughed field from where good views could be had back across the Trent valley to Cannock Chase. A road walk alongside the tall garden wall before we enter fields which fencing suggests are grazed by deer, but no sightings today. The path has been diverted and runs alongside the road but in the field, it was unsigned when we passed?...

This really marks the beginning of the 2nd flat part of the walk the more commercial and urban, gravel pits first then forward to the Trent and Mersey canal and a pub beside the bridge gaining access to the towpath taking the walk towards Burton....

Walk this routeAs the route hits Pipe Ridware it leaves The Way for the Millennium, which you have just joined, in order to take a route north via Hamstall Ridware. Getting into Hamstall Ridware (site of the second pub of the journey) you then have to follow a lane where the car is king. Having crossed yet another stile that requires the legs of Peter Crouch but the body of Ronnie Corbett I found the route joining the Way for the Millennium which I had left in Pipe Ridware....
David Sanderson
The first section leaves Rugeley via a lane that cars use rather than a more direct footpath that gets you to the same spot. The next section was usable but a new road and the diversion of a footpath throws the route into confusion in Hill Ridware. Directing you up a lane and then through a non-existent gap to then join a footpath which will take you back to the lane you would have been on had you not been directed up the first lane....
David Sanderson
There is an alternative route using a footpath which I will submit shortly avoiding this very unsafe section....

Walk this routeWhere this route differs from Kinyox One is that rather than continuing to follow the main road it takes a footpath off to the left which takes you over the Trent and into a lane then via a series of well mowed footpaths, delivers you to the edge of Yoxall. Kinyox Two, having crossed a local park, then takes a footpath that goes around the main part of Yoxall....

Walk this routeThroughout the walk there are great views out across the Trent Valley towards Rugeley and Lichfield. The route then picks up close to the River Trent and takes you across the fields outside Alrewas before a gorgeous crossing of the Trent and then the Trent and Mersey Canal....

This was an enjoyable walk through quiet countryside from Abbots Bromley to Yoxall via Hamstall Ridware. The walk starts in Abbots Bromley and comprises a mixture of fields with sheep, pasture, arable fields where the path is mostly easily visible and has been left clear of crops, quiet country lanes and a lovely tree-lined bridleway between fields coming into Yoxall....
