Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

The section from Storeton up to the B5151 (Mount Road) seemed unnecessarily complicated - easier to walk up Redhill Road ( a quiet lane much used by local walkers and away from the noise of the motorway)....

After leaving the residential area of Heswall on the Deeside of the Wirral the route passes through flat fields to Barnston. The next section from Storeton Lane over Prenton Brook via leafy Barnston Dale to Thingwall is very pleasant and the Bassett Hound pub a handy place for food/drink. However the final third - past the enormous crematorium at Landican - is along a busy main road to the roundabout at Woodchurch....

The route left Heswall bus station along residential pavements to go along the wooded footpath edge of Whitfield Common, then crossed the road to a footpath tucked in next to a school....

Soon we were heading up through another couple of fields and out onto Red Hill Road, an uphill road walk with no pavement, but quiet. Lots to like about this route, but not the mile of main road, the longer than necessary proximity of the M53, and a lot of mud....

From Woodchurch it headed straight into Arrowe Park along a tree-lined path. The route wound down a couple of quiet roads, through a corner of Ashton Park and onto the Wirral Way (a former railway line) into West Kirby....

However, the gate into this is locked when the shopping centre is closed and you'd need to use roads if that was the case....

A lovely green walk through some scenic parts of the Wirral including fields and forests. Unfortunately, due to its almost entirely unpaved nature, this route would likely be difficult for anyone with a wheelchair or pram. Cycling likewise not recommended as some parts specifically prohibit bikes....
Team Tato
Between two towns with good transport links and good pavements, there is a big chunk of countryside, often muddy, with gates and stiles which naturally excludes those using bicycles or wheelchairs, manual or motorised. That said, it is the best way of joining the two towns....

As with many routes moving through rural Wirral, the terrain and multitude of gates and stiles exclude wheeled users. But as a footpath, it's a good one! Through the always pleasant Arrowe Park; lots of fields; the odd wood and even an old RAF base, this starts and ends at areas good for transport, with shops at the Hoylake end, and a pub at Woodchurch....

A road walk through Woodchurch; a long railside footpath to Upton; up and over Bidston Hill (again, the terrain isn't the greatest for anything over two wheels); through Bidston and past the station (more stairs). A good walk through a variety of terrains, and always good to get up Bidston Hill....

I've amended the route slightly (HESWOO Two) to correct some odd footpath choices to make the route flow more naturally....

Walk this routeVery good for hikers and cyclists, but some areas exclude wheelchairs and buggies due to terrain and gate access....

Urban walk through Birkenhead, through Oxton, and ending up a Woodchurch. Well-paved throughout....

Fantastic route on footpaths and paved roads, but route from Caldy Hill doesn't exist! Despite marked on OS, it does not exist on the ground, passing through thick heather, gorse and new trees. Shall submit slightly amended WESWOO Two....

Walk this routeDespite a footpath by Townfield Primary being marked on the OS map, it is not on the Council footpath map, and the route goes through school grounds and actual houses. I'll reroute it soon....

Urban section through Bebington looks confusing on the map, but on the ground is sensible and makes a lot of sense. Pavements are even with crossings and ramps, but there are sections on unpaved roads and footpaths that exclude cyclists and wheelchairs. That being said, it is a pleasurant urban and rural walk through a pretty part of the Wirral....
