Help connect Wood Green

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Wood Green’s Slow Ways.

You can see Karl Marx tomb from the park - walk straight along the path ahead of you as you go through the gate - just past the barbecue bins you can peer into the cemetery and spot him!...

A reasonable route, not a lot of greenery on large parts, but a lot of fairly quiet backstreets. A couple of places on the way to stop for a break...

Route was generally pleasant, taking in some parks, tree lined back streets and the path along the new river path - meant it's possible to find a fairly peaceful green space that has a feel of countryside. The path along the river was generally relaxing, although in parts I could see it get muddy in winter. The path along the river was only really suitable for walking due to many gates that would make it difficult for anything other than a pedestrian to get by....

Very enjoyable , mainly on pavements with a long section through the park and a shorter section through some very beautiful and unexpected woods....

Lara

Walk this route

It is a pleasant route through parks and quiet residential roads that mostly avoids busy roads except for two short stretches, one to get past the railway at Harringay overground station, the other at the Wood Green end to get to the station. It goes through three green spaces, Highbury Fields, Gillespie Park and Finsbury Park....

The route almost immediately heads through Alexandra Park along Ally Pally (photo #2), but not before having crossed the rail ways at Alexandra Palace (photo #1). After leaving the park through a tunnel underneath Muswell Hill (photo #4), the route then continues along Parkland Walk (photo #5), with great views of the City (photo #6)....

Worth doing the route to go through Harringay Passage, getting into Gillespie Park (almost feels like a secret garden) and into Highbury Fields for the finish....

From Finsbury Park the route goes along the road, where we felt it might have been more pleasant to head through Gillespie Park - though it does go through the southernmost part of the park before leaving the park and heading up the second big hill of the route: Highbury Hill....

Mostly along the New River Path but it's not possible to walk along the New River the whole way and it's not always clear where the path goes when it has to divert - so a map is essential....

From Enfield Town, this route first crosses Enfield Town Park (I didn't walk straight across it, too muddy), before it then follows the New River Path for most of its length....

Derick Rethans

There are a few minor points that might marginally improve the route: turning at Bounds Green Tube to head down Brownlow Road and crossing the North Circular at the lights rather than using the footbridge could be an option that would avoid some of the awkward streets north of Bounds Green while the short leg into Oak Hill Park feels a little unnecessary....

While I would definitely walk the route again, I would personally leave the New River Path at Bounds Green Road and head directly for Wood Green Tube as it feels counter-intuitive to loop through Avenue Gardens and Wood Green column, even though the road route is only slightly shorter....

Wood Green is a typically vibrant and grimy local urban centre with a few hidden gems (photo 1). Not long after Bounds Green Station the route takes you along quieter roads leading to the passage between terraces (photo 3) reminiscent of the Haringay Ladder on neighbouring #WooDal Two....

After Finsbury Park station - instead of walking down Saint Thomas's Road you can (when there isn't an Arsenal match on) go up the steps just before the rail bridge and into Gillespie Park Nature Reserve which is a nice off road path. From busy Dalston Station (shops & cafes) there is a busy urban road, turn right past a church to Butterfield Green a lovely park, then a play space and another small park before another road, a quiet one this time. Exiting the park another wide quiet road leads to Finsbury Park a large open park with lots of sports facilities....

It's mostly urban pavement walking, with some lovely sections through muddy Coldwall Wood, and along a windy section through Alexandra Park....

Derick Rethans

I would suspect that when Arsenal has a home game, sections of this would be ridiculously busy though, so maybe best avoided then. Highbury Fields was another highlight....

Derick Rethans

It's entirely on smooth pavements and almost entirely along roads but the scenery is quite varied and diverse and I really enjoyed the route overall!...

Walk this route

After the busy High Street (coffee, snacks!) you are quickly into a small park then up to Alexandra Park Station and across a bridge leading to Alexandra Park with views of London and the Palace. Through an avenue of trees, past a café in The Grove to passageways and into a Parkland walk with more views of London....

Strider

Apart from the A406 the streets are generally wide and quiet with green spots but no parks. There is a narrow uneven part but okay for wheels, generally downhill going South....

Coldfall is pretty, but if the route needs to go through Craighton Avenue, it might be more efficient to leave the wood to the side and instead turn south towards Twyford Avenue, Queen's Avenue and Duke's Avenue....

Rafael Goriwoda

Walk this route

A couple of deviations from main roads could be changed to avoid using poorly maintained back streets/paths (use Elm Park Road instead of Sherbrook Gardens in Winchmore Hill; also use Melville Gardens after crossing A406 instead of separate pathway). The path alongside the New River in Winchmore Hill also needs to be followed all the way down to the gate onto Highfield Road (see photo)....

I believe the problem is that the route crosses the Islington & St Pancras Cemetery therefore there are restrictions to access....

Tom

Walk this route

Not suitable for walking at dusk/night due to some remote and uneven paths with no lighting, especially on Hampstead Heath. Need to pay attention to take the correct paths on the Heath to enter and exit at the right place....
