Help connect Winchcombe
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Winchcombe’s Slow Ways.

One added benefit is that you can use the heritage Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway to use as transport to the start or from the end point, in fact on several occasions I caught sight of the steam train as the railway runs parallel with the walk. The route also passes by Stanway House (limited opening days in Summer) which hosts the biggest gravity fed fountain in the world, and the remains of Hailes Abbey, a scheduled monument managed by English Heritage and had lots of visitors when I walked past....

Excellent route through countryside which is well signposted since it mostly follows the Cotswold Way, but makes short cuts to skip some of the crazy loops of the National Trail! The villages on the route are absolutely gorgeous and for me they typify the beauty of the Cotswolds much more than the touristy towns at each end. A stop in Stanton is definitely recommended - up the hill to the Mount Inn if you need refreshments!...

Also the eastern section which follows Langley Road was much busier than I expected for a minor road - lots of local traffic (I think there was an obstruction on the main road, so locals who knew the route were taking the diversion, so this problem might not be repeated)....

Route more or less correctly mapped, I would just make a couple of suggestions at each end. On Chewin1 the route uses a path between Welland Lodge Road and Broad Acre Road. The route heads to a gap between houses in Southam, potentially there may be refreshments at Southam de la Bere Hotel, just off route, but it is very posh. From Southam the route uses bits of old road and footways, then crosses the B4632 (take care here - fast traffic) to head steeply up Ashleigh Lane. At Postlip Mill a new path takes the route above the noisy industrial area (CheWin1 not correctly mapped here)....

Walk this route5hrs including a 30min stop at The Mount Inn, in Stanton for refreshments. A few steep inclines to deal with around Hailes & Buckland but nothing too difficult....

Can't quite give it a full five stars as last couple of miles into Winchcombe is on a road (OK, a country road with grass in the centre!) and Winchcombe itself is scarred by lanes of parked cars (imagine what it would look like car-free--see accompanying pics)....

Both trails are regularly painted by the Cotswold Voluntary Wardens....
Cotswold Walker
Route follows Windrush Way from Winchcombe to Lower Slaughter before following Heart of England Trail. Route is popular and well marked....
Cotswold Walker
An enjoyable route for the experienced walker, better undertaken in dry conditions because it combines lowland pasture beside a stream, ploughed fields and rutted/muddy hill tracks. There are stiles and kissing gates to negotiate. Signage usually good but care needed to avoid bull in field at Great Washbourne and when crossing two busy roads....
