Walk this route

We checked this route on a hot and dry Saturday, as part of wider efforts to create the Slow Ways National Parks Trail. It certainly makes a great leg for the trial. Someone might know of a better west-east crossing of the Moor, but in terms of views, mix of places, distinct paths, ease of navigation, directness and avoidance of bog - this must be a good contender.. This is a solid route that largely follows the Two Moors Way and the Dartmoor Way High Moor Link, so it is reasonably way marked. Between 1km East of Dartmeet and just west of Ponsworthy the route sticks to quiet lanes instead. This means you miss out on the delightful view of Shap Tor but also the likelihood of getting wet feet in the valley 500m to its west.. 1) Between Jordan and Ponsworthy the route on the ground follows a riverside path, a small distance to the east of the right of way marked on OS maps. It's obvious where to go when you get there.....

There is very little traffic, at least on the Saturday morning in early September when I walked it there was very little, and for most of it the roads are narrow so driving is usually slow and there are many places to step off the road....

Walk this route

This route largely follows quiet moorland and country lanes with some public footpath sections at either end. The route starts on a public footpath through Widecombe churchyard then down across a field to join a quiet country lane. It is difficult to find a more direct route with less road walking but the lanes are quiet and scenic....

I can’t recommend this slowway due to an access issue - section through Welstor Cottage to Bowdley has no public access - otherwise would have been a good route. Have uploaded widash two as an alternative which uses most of this route but avoids issue....

Walk this route

From North Bovey it follows quiet country lanes and a lovely holloway. Choice of pubs and cafés at Widecombe (I can recommend the Rugglestone south of the village centre en route to Ashburton - it also has a camping field)....

It's quite a climb from there up on to the moor at Heatree, but very quiet - with options to go on other lanes if you want....
