Help connect Whittlesey

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Whittlesey’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

The route is accurate and mainly off-road apart from the urban sections at the beginning and end, the relatively busy A47/A141 roundabout at Guyhirn, and pavement-free single track lanes with light but fast traffic on leaving Whittlesey and on the approach to Wisbech. There is a pedestrian crossing on the A47 (to Thornley/Peterborough) which allows access to Guyhirn village where the route rejoins the dyke, before dropping down to North Brink (lane) for the final stretch, and passing the Ellgoods Brewery shop on the way in to Wisbech....

At Bridge Street I carried on straight when the route turned left onto Bourges Boulevard and then walking on the A15 with no pavement. There were dropped curbs at most junctions, noteably not Windmill St (south side of Stonald Road) into Whittlesey, the north side had dropped curbs opposite....

The route, as written includes crossing a 25m wide river, deep enough for boats to pass, north of Whittlesey....

Before coming into March the path cuts out onto the road before then rejoining the path shortly after, though the path from the road back to the river has been maintained somewhat, there was lots of blackthorn hedge trimmings and nettles that I had to carry my bike over which wouldn't be good for someone in a wheel chair, you could possibly just carry on along the road instead of rejoining the path though the cars are quite fast....

Coming out of Peterborough you follow nice smooth pathways along canals which all seems to be very accessible with large open fields and a few passes over bridges....

Lots of flat land farm land and locked gates. After Turves, was a gravel track/ edge of field, very boring, mostly farm land and big mono crops. Just before March, have to go off the canal as a farm isn't allowing access....

There is probably a slightly more accessible route at the start in Peterborough where you can avoid walking alongside the A15 and down the pedestrianised Bridge Street before turning across and along the River Nene....
