There was a signposted section which provided clear re-routing, and we missed the path over the field just before Westoe, but the road itself was pretty quiet and easier to navigate by....

Leaving Westow up to Spy Hill and then into Howsham wood was straight forward. The OS route is clear of the route but this did not match up with the worn path which leads straight to Howsham Wood. Once into the wood, the map was clear and relatively straight forward to navigate. We walked along the footpath which was the side of a field. We joined the footpath after the junction and from there to Stamford Bridge was sheer hell, no discernible footpath, nettles and thistles and a barbed wire fence to keep us away from Bleach Farm. Indeed I noticed that the farmer had planted hawthorn on the boundary to make the footpath event more impenetrable....

First thing to note is the high bank alongside the footpath as you leave Malton (please see picture 1), suggesting that this may be a flood plain and possibly impassable during winter floods. There were a couple of points where we tried (and managed) to stay between the river and the railway but on one point, we followed the barely viewable track marks (the footpath was very overgrown) around the field boundary into the middle to cross a stream to get into the next field and then headed back to the river in the next field - to find that the official footpath actually stuck close to the river. The road at this stage gave a much easier navigation route, the footpath seemed a little OTT....

The footpath into Westow is not signposted: turn right off Church Lane, opposite the playground and go up the field following the field headlands....
