Pity that the trees have grown around the Wellington monument blocking the views. I was hoping for a wide view....

The road out of Wiveliscombe wasn't great for walking and I wonder why the route does not take the Wivey Way route north of the road. So I diverted via the Wivey Way path to the north, rejoining the route at Quakinghouse Lane....
Alan Morris
A reasonable route with some nice views in the middle where the route crosses from Devon into Somerset....

We were staying half way along it so the plan was to walk one half then the other but we abandoned it after one half. However the route is blocked at Heywood farm by at least 2 electric fences....

After that I had to cross fields of sweetcorn, where unfortunately it was shortly before harvest and the crop was thick and towering over me. I walked the field edge path, which wasn't great, there isn't really a path and the crop is planted almost to the hedgerow. Some of the paths on the map have disappeared, so I stuck to the forestry commission tracks, but they don't connect well with the other plantations, so following this route, when you get to locked gates at a water/drainage station look right for a narrow path through the woodland. After this path, you have to cross the B3170, and go through a gate to the next plantation. Look right and follow a firm narrow path that leads you uphill and then to a proper track. I couldn't work out where the path was, until I realised the path was a stream. The crops will be gone soon, so those fields will be easy to cross most of the time....

Walk this routeWhen the houses are built I'm sure there will be a way through, but right now it's fenced off, and looks like it will be for months, if not years. I know there isn't a bridge across the M5 on the byway, and I'm 90% sure there isn't an underpass. I don't like either option, but I think Ford Street isn't as busy as Junction 26....

Involves more distance along the canal, rather than the quiet lane walking of tivwel2 between Halberton and Battens Bridge but makes for a route of an equal standard....

We walked this route from Wellington to Tiverton. This new route is 99% true to Tim's, but just deals with those snags....

Walking towards Tiverton the access was not clear in a couple of spots and this version helps with that....

Walk this routeI walked from Wellington to Taunton on a sunny day, but at the end of a week of rain and that made sections of this route a bit tricky....
Helen Gough
Very little road walking apart from in Wellington where the route follows the busy B3187 through Tonedale....
Tim Ryan
From the Monument to Hemyock the route is often through quiet woodland. When the route opens out the views are brilliant across the Culm Valley. The lanes on the route are quiet, I didn't come across any traffic on them....
Helen Gough
I walked this route in the Wiveliscombe to Wellington direction on a lovely sunny day at the start of July....
Charles Hedley
Mostly a lovely flat route which follows the well waymarked West Deane Way from Bradford to Taunton....
Charles Hedley
Much of the route follows the West Deane Way and is a lovely walk, pleasant and traffic free of getting away from the city centre....

A little on unpaved but slow roads at Millhayes before a path uphill....

There are diversions (at the time of the review) where there are construction works to the north of Wellington, and these are open to change. But there are notices identifying the route. Some muddy sections experienced....
Tim Ryan
The route in and out of Wellington currently is subject to a temporary footpath closure until April 2022, due to housing development. There is a detour in place once you get to it, which directs you over the railway bridge at Longforth farm. However a different route from the start/finish to this point is described in WIVWEL two....

Walk this routeThere is a long section along the busy A373 between Cullompton and Willand albeit there is a pavement at least on one side throughout....

A scenic and enjoyable route up and over the Blackdown Hills. Some of the route on the day included a small boggy section and there was a dark and unlit underpass under the M5, fine by daylight....

The walk crosses and re-crosses the busy A38 and the Great Western trainline, one through an underpass and twice on un-manned crossings....

Walk this routeA pleasant and relatively flat 17 mile route. Mostly on canal towpath and footpaths....

I would recommend in this case diverting in the following way: Cross Netherclay Community Woodland diagonally, going onto the road by the bridge, turn left along the footpath by the side of Tytherleigh House, cross Silk Mills and then enter Longrun Meadow and follow the path to the right. Keep Castle School on your right and follow the cycle/foot path down towards Tescos, turn left and then after a small bridge turn right and you will rejoin the existing route....

Some sections are still in use; in others there are good earthworks and other points of archeological interest....
