Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Tooting’s Slow Ways.

After a short busy section in Streatham (photo #1, #2), the route deviates from the shortest, and instead has a lovely meander along and through the commons (photo #3, #4, #5)....
Derick Rethans
Calm and quiet roads on the Balham side become busier on the approach to Tooting Broadway as drivers look for shortcuts to avoid the busy A24 Upper Tooting Road....
LisaO
Some steps to an underpass - the underpass itself was the only slightly grotty part of the route. Not a long route, but there are still refreshments on the way, and generally it’s all a very pleasant South London connection...
Jane Taylor
This is perhaps not the prettiest walk but it is quick, direct, easy to navigate along quieter suburban roads with good pavements....
Strider
This route is not very far from where I live and the walk across the common is a much nicer alternative than walking down Balham High St. The common is festooned with long uncut grass and it feels you could be in the countryside. The common can get busy with everyone over the weekend....
Lizbiz70
Crossing Trinity Road can be tricky, it's a very busy road. Also it's not that easy to spot the small dirt track across Wandsworth Common....
Philip Sparks
Majority on pavement so it was nice to change it up when going through Wandsworth Common....
Laura Haigh
The road in Tooting is busier and less pleasant to walk alongside, but there is more interest at that end....
David Sanderson
Nice easy to follow route. Couple of road crossings...
Oliver Cannon
Agree with the other reviewers, a fairly straightforward urban walk between two town centres....
Strider
Turn off Trinity Road at crossing lights to join surfaced cycle track towards railway bridge....
JohnMyerson
Crossing at Tooting Station is easy but not Longley Road at its junction....
JohnMyerson
I was immersed in a beautiful snowy Tooting Common and crossed the main road onto Storey Road and straight down to Mitcham Road. It was busy and traffic congested crossing a busy junction...
Lizbiz70
I really enjoyed walking this route from Clapham Junction to my hometown of Tooting with fellow Slow wayers. The walk through Wandsworth Common was especially pleasant. Tooting High street is a wonderland when it comes to resturants and cafes!...
Saira
A direct and enjoyable route between Tooting Broadway and Earlsfield!...
Saira
A much more enjoyable version of the walk, with the improvement of the crossing of Wandsworth Common, elminating the tricky road crossing on the Common, and the use of the main roads into Tooting, including the link with Tooting Bec tube station. The road sections are all on wide pavements. Direct, interesting, safe, easy to follow, links to transport and with a multitude of refreshment options at either end....
David Sanderson
Urban roads leading to Wandsworth Common with a variety of trees including Service Trees (a favourite)....
Strider
The walk along Bolingbroke Grove was mostly alongside Wandsworth Common therefore pleasant, especially as the road wasn’t too busy. Crossing the Common on a tarmacked path away from the road was good....
Mary Oz
Good, direct route between Tooting Broadway and Earlsfield. The main road is a bit busy, but the pavement is wide and good. It also includes a bit of green space and interesting bits like Streatham Cemetery and the Earlsfield Public Library....
Ingrina
A straightforward direct route, which was fairly pleasant despite some of it being along a main road, because it wasn’t too busy. There was a small section through a park, parched after a heatwave. There were also several interesting buildings, nice housing, and ghost signs to add interest....
Mary Oz
Garratt Green was Garratt Brown after the scorching weather but a welcome open space....
Strider
The route follows pavement predominantly with a brief burst of greenery on Garratt Green....
David Sanderson
Two out of four segments are really fantastic and two more are perfectly good for Slow Ways routes! First, leaving Clapham Junction to Wandsworth Common are really good streets with good pavements and pleasant walking....
mtormey
There's three parts to the route - a stretch with a good distance along a larger busier road with good pavements, a stretch through the lovely Garratt Green, and a brief walk along a quieter residential street on the way to Earlsfield....
mtormey
Once away from the traffic and noise of Streatham High Road, this route becomes quite green and pleasant. It crosses Tooting Bec and Tooting Commons before continuing along fairly quiet roads until it reaches the main road into Tooting....
Intrepid Rabbit
The walk from Tooting Broadway to Balham via the high street is interesting, chaotic and colourful and passes by many hidden spaces including the market, a sewing machine museum and some great indian and pakistani restaurants!...
Saira
The walk from Tooting Broadway to Balham via the high street is in my opinion more interesting, colourful, lively and direct!...

Walk this routeVisit Tooting Marker or Broadway Market for food, drink, and produce....
Ingrina
Overall, good walk between Tooting Broadway and Wimbledon....
Ingrina
I understand the reason for this from the point of view of having a quieter walk, but I felt like I missed the heart of Tooting and this version of the route misses the opportunity to connect with Tooting Bec tube station. Upon reaching Wandsworth Common, the route follows a wooded dirt track rather than a paved path....
David Sanderson
As you come into Tooting and get to the station you turn left into Longley Road....
David Sanderson
I walked part of this route in August 2021 from Colliers Wood to Wimbledon. It was straightforward and no problems. It seems to follow signposted cycle routes....
paulyoung
A very pleasant route for both walking & cycling, largely over Tooting Bec Common. It takes the shortest way across the common, but there are plenty of other paths....
Malcolm Jones
Cross the park to the Trinity Road gate & turn right back to South Park Road & turn left. I also suggest going through Haydons Road Rec, by turning right off South Park Road on Bridges Road then left on Latimer Road past the Victorian Swimming Pool, right on Wycliffe Road & left on Quicks Road to the corner of the Rec....

tractiveeffort added Toostr two, a new walk from Tooting to Streatham
Walk this routeQuickest and most flat route between Tooting Broadway and Earlsfield station. Misses the lower part of Earlsfield 'centre', if you wanted more than just end to end, but is off the main roads as much as possible....
SnowGoose
This is a good route which is quite direct and takes in the expanse of Wandsworth Common. There is a sharp gradient to cross the railway bridge in the common....
tractiveeffort
Pavements are good, route is direct, some busy roads but not too bad....
tractiveeffort
This definitely a pleasant route as urban routes go, but far from the most direct....
tractiveeffort
London Road in Mitcham can be quite polluted at busy times. Gradient of Longley Road up to the railway bridge is steep and the junction there hard to cross....
tractiveeffort
Good route for the most part; although the section along Tooting High St can be very polluted, the alternative would involve an awkward footbridge over the railway...
