On the east side (photo #8), after crossing Houndslow Road, the route as drawn, will want you to do down a side road with cottages, and then north on Mount Road to Hampton Road West. You need to go north along Houndslow Road, and then ideally use the signalled crossing to get to the north side of Hampton Road West. If I would were to draw this route myself, I would have looped back to the river after crossing the bridge going north, to continue along the river. The rest of the route is mainly through Crane Park, and along the river (photo #14, #15)....

The first two-thirds is along fairly green residential streets (photo #2) with wide pavements (photo #3, #4), although these were again full of cars (photo #5)....

Originally I continued onto Felix Lane, with a narrow footpath behind a line (photo #4), which then goes through the River Ash Estate (photo #4, #6) around the south side of the marina. After crossing the bridge (photo #7) through a loopy twizzle, the route then continues along the Thames (photo #8, #9), and then up some steps (photo #10) to finish in the centre of Walton....

It is an otherwise good route, but there was a closed gate near the marina, where River Ash Estate meats Penny Lane near the Sea Cadets. It's not a public right of way here. I've uploaded Walsun 4, that solves this problem, where you'll also find my full review....

Walk this routeAccess to the south side of the station was via the roundabout subways and Green Lane to Downside (avoiding the station footbridge). A little annoying that the pavement in Lower Hampton Road swaps sides a couple of times. Pedestrian lights to cross Hampton Court Road before entering Bushy Park by gate....

I walked Kingston to Sunbury, it starts well but for those on wheels, it would soon become a bit of a nightmare around Hampton Waterworks where the footway narrows significantly; see photos....
Teddington Troubadour
To avoid crossing the Great Chertsey Road you can follow the river under two bridges then turn right and back to go along the cycle track next to the main road. The nearest toilets at Sunbury Cross are in Tesco Extra (900 metres), although you pass the Hare and Hounds pub in Vicarage Road....

I walked this wonderful route on a Sunday in May, when the Sunbury ferry was running. Before the ferry I discovered Sunbury Park, a large green space with trees and benches, perfect for picnics....

Jane Taylor added Walsun three, a new walk from Walton-on-Thames to Sunbury-on-Thames
Walk this routeThe riverside section is busy with people doing marina-y sorts of things; there’s a section across fields, and a long shaded footpath connecting into Sunbury. There are plenty of other reasons to access the area, including a hotel and marina, and plenty of people going to and fro, and I didn’t feel at all that this was a ‘no go’ area....

Jane Taylor added Walsun two, a new walk from Walton-on-Thames to Sunbury-on-Thames
Walk this routeThis route has some access problems outlined by previous reviewers - photo shows one of the blockages. I’ll put up a revised version which sorts it out....
Jane Taylor
The first half is residential streets and a long stretch on a B road, pavements and trees make this section tolerable....
Jane Taylor
From Kingston station there is a short walk though a shopping area to the bridge across the Thames across some busy roads then into Bushey Park. A wheel friendly route is easily done by avoiding the muddy path along the parallel French Street; and accessing the station (shops and busses) from the other side via the roundabout underpass then along the A308 Staines Road for a short distance...
Strider
From Sunbury station there is a subway under the busy roads, this is safe but difficult to navigate. After a couple of urban roads there's the antithesis of the cramped urban walkway across Hanworth Park with wide open spaces and thousands of buttercups, big skies across which planes fly low....
Strider
To address the poor mapping across the roundabout at Sunbury. On approach you can see the underpass where it is open in the middle of the roundabout so you know there is one, but yes, the entrances are not well marked....
Strider
I have a concern about the roughly drawn route-line at Sunbury, which - being a bit astray - does not in my opinion make it sufficiently clear to use the underpass to cross between the town and the railway station. This will be more likely to cause problems walking Ashford to Sunbury for anyone who doesn't have local knowledge, because it's quite easy to miss the subway access if you are not looking for it....
Jane Taylor
This is probably the best route possible, and it includes a long and very enjoyable green middle across Hanworth Park, Pevensey nature reserve, and Hounslow Heath....
Jane Taylor
I know most of this route well, especially the river Crane part; and also the Sunbury end for access to the occasionally open Kempton Steam Museum. The route goes through mostly green spaces and some residential streets, until the final mile or so approaching Sunbury, where it is accompanied by the A316 ‘Country Way’ (a joke surely?), a dual carriageway which is the main feeder for the M3, which starts at Sunbury....
Jane Taylor
A easy flat walk with a poor section along drainage ditch next to Sunbury Court. Some gravel paths in Busy Park and the access gates are heavy to open. One busy zebra crossing close to Kingston Bridge....
James Emmans
The route north of the Thames does pass over a private road but I passed local people and they seemed friendly....
James Emmans
It is ok to walk to the station not using the underpasses, but this will be only practical during early mornings or when the traffic is at a minimum....
James Emmans
Surprising amount of off road sections in just a urban area. The are some narrow barriers on Houslow Heath and a few steep gradient that are short....
James Emmans
The part that took you down Felix Lane, went via River Ash Private Estate to Walton Bridge, but it was possible to walk through this - one part had a notice saying that a gate would be locked one day a year meaning you wouldn't be able to use that bit of the route on that day. On leaving Walton Bridge to access Walton town centre the plotted route was not feasible as it took you down a dead end with a private house at the end....
Jac007
I would suggest a slightly altered route and that would be to head down to the river bank on the Walton side and head towards Hampton Court direction and then over the footbridge at the entrance of Walton Marina and turn right up the broad steps to River Mount and continue straight up Bridge Street to the traffic lights....

Although the Hounslow end is fine, the Sunbury end is impossible. There is no throughway at Kempton Park. This is private land - a race course!...

Philipj8 added Sunhou two, a new walk from Sunbury-on-Thames to Hounslow
Walk this routeVery pleasant walk along riverside path, across open park land although the Sunbury end is mainly on a pavement next to a road. This is one kissing gate however this does have a reasonable space for a push chair. Mainly on paved or well maintained gravel paths....
