Help connect Stone Cross

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Stone Cross’s Slow Ways.

I walked this route yesterday travelling west from Stone Cross....

The first can be described as getting to Bescot stadium, the middle section as negotiating the Motorway, the railway and the River Tame, and then finally suburbia on the route into Stone Cross....

Another interesting Slow Ways starting from Great Barr along the busy Newton Road before going through quite streets joining the Tame Valley Canal....

Beyond the river we turn left (there is a paved path but most people take a shortcut across the grass) and follow Woden Road South to a junction where we turn right up Hyde Road then left up Chestnut Road, which points us in the right direction for the walk up to Wednesbury, where the meeting point is on the square outside the bus station....

Walk this route

From West Bromwich bus station we turn right up St Michael Street and left onto High Street, which we follow out past the Town Hall and the Memorial Gardens then turn right beyond Lidl onto Shaftesbuury Street, which crosses under the busy A41 through an underpass....

Walk this route

The route is safe and generally easy to follow particularly with the advice given in the reviews for navigating the section around Bescot stadium and sidings. The short section walking beside the M6 just before J9 is somewhat surreal but memorable. Overall a very enjoyable SlowWays route and very much recommended....

A safe, easy to follow and enjoyable route avoiding any main roads....

All routes already had a good review so I concur that they are good or adequate plots. I overshot the path from Bescot stadium because it has no footpath sign, but then it's not on the map as a footpath, it's the pedestrian station approach which has a good surface. The plot is fine but needs care to cross the River Tame, a motorway and two rail lines. A heron stood by the river side so I had to assume the Tame has fish....

All routes already had a good review so I concur that they are good or adequate plots. Stone Cross had Christmas preparations well in hand at the meeting point where a good selection of shops are on offer including the local branch of The WestBrom. A short walk, passing the 1928 HQ of the building society then onto the bus station opposite the Billiard Hall and round the corner to the meeting point close to the metro....

The route takes you through the Market Square (the clock tower was surrounded in scaffolding) and then down a busy commercial street to the site of the current market....

Walk this route

There's no denying that this a direct no-nonsense kind of a walk between the centre of West Bromwich and one of its suburbs but it includes a section through Charlemont Cemetery which I had never visited before....

Wednesbury—Stone Cross

Ric Keeling added Wedsto two, a new walk from Wednesbury to Stone Cross

Walk this route

The first section of the walk follows the pavement of the A4031 Walsall Road, a dual carriageway so this is not the most pleasant section of the walk. It is just as you can see the M6 and M5 interchange loom in the distance that the peaceful straight aqueduct of the Tame Valley offers you escape. The walk from there is an unusual experience as the canal crosses the Tame Valley, the tiny river unnoticed below. Having crossed the valley, the canal passes a junction for the Rushall Canal and then under the M6....

The only slightly tricky section to follow is near the Bescot Stadium where you have to cross the M6, The River Tame and the railway line! Having crossed the car park as if to go to Bescot Stadium railway station you walk under the M6 and then turn right and follow the footpath. I wonder if there could be a more accessible route which runs via Tame Bridge Parkway but that's for another day....
