Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Standlake’s Slow Ways.

Very pretty route, provided a good walk for the first 11 or so miles, but the last two miles (furthest from Oxford) were so flooded as to be impassable without taller boots than mine sadly. Nevertheless what of it I could walk I very much enjoyed, and will try it again once I’ve gotten knee boots or the weather has dried. Who would’ve guessed England would be so rainy?...

One other thing to mention about a road is that at Newbridge (about 2km out from Standlake, where the route crosses the Thames) the road isn't hugely busy but because the bridge is traffic light controlled, the cars come in groups....

Walk this routeI walked it Oxford-Standlake, and made a further small improvement leaving Oxford: on Osney Island, go down West Street, turn right into Swan Street, cross the footbridge and follow the path across the top of Oatlands Rec before turning left after the bridge to join the path down to North Hinksey. Not a big enough difference to justify another route, though, and you may prefer to take in Osney Lock on the official route....

This route starts the same way as Witsta One (passing through Ducklington), but thereafter a much larger part of it is off-road. The bridleway section from Ducklington to Yelford is easy to follow, despite the twists and turns. There are no facilities mid-route, with the exception of a single bench at Yelford, making it more attractive for some and less so for others....

After leaving Bampton (where the church scenes in Downton Abbey were filmed), the route passes beside Shill Brook. A significant part of the route after Aston is on the Chimney Meadows nature reserve, and the relatively treeless landscape and flat water meadows are a delight....

Firstly, the section from Standlake to Newbridge could be better: both from Standlake to Oxford and Standlake to Kingston Bagpuize spend more time off-road, and I'd recommend the path those routes take....

This is a lovely enjoyable walk which we did from Standlake to Witney, which are connected by a bus route. The route itself was easy to follow with plenty of way markers and is well maintained. From the highest rural points there are lovely views even though the route is not especially hilly....

Martin McGovern added Stakin two, a new walk from Standlake to Kingston Bagpuize
Walk this routeThe route only crosses the Thames, but follows the Windrush for a short period. Firstly, just south of Newbridge, the route has no choice but to follow the A415 for a short period....

The next section is predominantly over farmland, with the final third of the route winding through gravel beds towards Standlake. A similar situation occurs a little further south - the route implies that you head straight across the road at West End, when in fact you walk a little way along the road at SP428042....

But I followed it all the way from Standlake to KP, and discovered that there's an error in the last 500m or so - Blandy Avenue does not connect to School Lane. I've uploaded Stakin Two with a correction....

A substantial part of it, maybe 25%, is on the A415, including significant sections without pavements, so you have to walk on the verge (see picture). I've added Witsta2, which is slightly longer, but spends much more of the route off-road. The section between Witney and Ducklington is the same in both routes....

Walk this routeIt's reasonably gentle, with a nice range of path types - a nice stretch of riverside, with others being more or less wooded, and others going through farmland....

On approach to Faringdon, I diverted so that I could go to the Folly Tower and approach the town from the south side of London Street....

Good route, but the walk out of Oxford is fairly circuitous when it could be made much more direct; also, when heading from Oxford to Standlake, the path turns north out of Appleton to reach a bridge to cross the Thames, but no path connection exists there. I've uploaded a new route that fixes both of these issues....

Super varied in terrain and scenery, and a beautiful way to get out into the countryside from Oxford!...
