Connect Southam with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Southam to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?
Give a hike!Help connect Southam
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Southam’s Slow Ways.

I struggled to find a way onto the Harry Greenway at first but if you walk the road up to the water polo club you can get onto the Greenway through the trees. The walk along Harry Greenway is very peaceful, all you can hear there are grasshoppers....

The route takes you out of Daventry fairly quickly, up and over the A45 via the 'curly wurly' pedestrian bridge (photo 1). Leaving Kentle Wood behind, the route opens up to give fantastic views over to Bush Hill, Flecknoe and Warwickshire (photo 3). The one mitigating factor was at least the farmers left a strip of land around the perimeter of these fields which meant we could walk relatively easily around the perimeters to follow the route - albeit by taking a slightly longer. The field perimeter diversions ended once we got past Miry Bridge, and after that the route was relatively easy to follow all the way into Flecknoe. After leaving Flecknoe, the route towards the canal sees a return of the aforementioned roughly ploughed fields and missing RoW (photo 8). After a short 10m stretch of road walking alongside the busy A425 and past the old Bridge pub which is now just private residences, the route takes you along the Millennium Way towards Stockton....

The route when you pass the farm is impassable onto the Fosse, instead go through the gate on the left and follow the Millenium Way to meet the Fosse and turn right to rejoin the route The path out of Priors Hardwick is difficult to find and I would suggest a short detour into Priors Hardwick by turning right at the church then shortly left to rejoin the route...

After crossing the canal feeder (photo 3), you have to look carefully for the short route through the overgrown copse (photo 4). On the route towards Priors Hardwick, you approach a farm with a poorly maintained stile (photo 6). The route on the other side of the farm follows a hedge and is supposed to come out onto the Welsh Road. You have to then look carefully for the route out of Priors Hardwick, as when we did the route it wasn't that obvious as it seemed to cut through a back garden. After walking down the escarpment around an old derelict barn, the route takes you diagonally through a small section of woodland towards Bennet's Barn Farm....

Upon leaving Southam, I did find an official notice (photo 1) which advises that path will be closed till the end of 2024, so that was confirmation for me to take route two. When they do eventually reopen the route, you'll be taking the footbridge as opposed to the route to the right in my 2nd photo. After crossing the B4452, the route heads west between a farm and Ufton wood (photo 6). Eventually, the route arrives at Ufton, where if you've timed your walk right and if you so wish, the White Hart pub is an excellent place to grab refreshments. On leaving the lias ridge of Harbury via steps cut into the hill (photo 15), you have to cross an oft used lane to gain access to a path through Lower Westfields Farm (photo 10) which has horses and donkeys grazing on the path. Whichever route you do take over Crown Hill or through the farm, both routes re-join on the other side of the hill and then takes you past the intriguingly named Isle of Wight barn, before heading through pasture and a stud farm as you travel towards Whitnash....

It was good walk and I enjoyed the route. I can recommend this route as part of the network, although because of the road walking it doesn't quite get the full five stars from me....

The route between Southam and Ufton has many kissing gates and a few narrow footbridges, but after Ufton, the route is easy, especially along the canal section....

The walk leaves by the B4086 but soon leaves the road to follow footpaths past MOD Kineton ,then on to Gaydon where there is a village shop with refreshments. The path leaves via Bull Ring Farm Road and crosses the Railway Line then follows tracks and footpaths eventually entering Ufton Fields Nature Reserve....

This route follows town roads out of Leamington, then follows the Grand Union Canal before some more road walking on the Welsh Road and then passes the Holy Well into Southam. HS2 work currently effects the Welsh Road....
