A nice steady walk from Shipton by Beningbrough to Haxby. I would walk this route again and it can easily be linked up with the Yorhax2 route to make a longer walk back into York....

I liked the middle part on the road to Huby, because I am doing a long distance route, and I found it frustrating to start and finish with curving detours south when I wanted to head north!...

The obstacles mentioned in previous reviews have been removed: the narrow footpath between fences has recently been cleared of nettles, and the footpath is open all the way along. Coming from Shipton, the first cafe I came across near the path is the YHA as you enter the city at Clifton....

Both previous reviews make interesting points as to the enjoyment of this route, but having walked it on a beautiful autumn day, I have to concur with both in their praise, and to also say I found the lane stretch quite beautiful for its rural nature and ease of navigation. All the centres on this route are very nice places, with plenty of amenities....

Navigating the route required assistance via phones/apps even with people in the group reasonably familiar with the area, and other than the spiky narrow path it was a reasonably easy walk/trek/hike, and was enjoyable....

This was a great route apart from the last closed off section of footpath. I followed the cycle route to Overton. I'm sure once the works are finished the complete route will be fine....

On footpath there is a small section which is very narrow and overgrown with nettles - this would be extremely difficult if you had mobility issues....

We started this walk in Shipton by Beningbrough after getting the bus from York. The buses aren't very frequent, so we decided it was easier to get the bus to Shipton by Beningbrough and then we had no time pressure for completing the walk. After a pleasant walk down Burrell's Lane, the next couple of miles were on country lanes which had a surprising amount of traffic. If there has been heavy rain then there is a chance that the flood plain is underwater and you may not be able to walk alongside the river, this is more likely in the winter....

I actually ended up taking a detour nearer to Huby due to some cows in a field. The remainder of the walk to Huby cows and sheep were in the fields but the farmers had put a nice segregation fence along the path so you could walk without fear of interrupting sheep. This part of the journey started out well, I left Huby and followed the main road, by footpath to the turning. There is a gate to the left of the house which you navigate round, but it was hidden by a wheely bin and very overgrown. I only noticed it because once I had reached Shipton I did the walk in reverse. Overall the walk was pleasant, but certainly the Huby to Shipton section isn't so much a walk I would recommend for general walkers who are out to enjoy scenery...

North of Skelton, however, there are options to shorten the route if desired, by bearing right towards Overton at GR559555 and staying on the quiet road all the way to Shipton, or by using the route of Shiyor one....

The land around is flat so there are few views, but there are a few buildings of interest to look out for in Shipton, Wigginton and Haxby, and Wigginton boasts a delightful village pond....

The diversion in place (take farm track north then turn right onto Overton Road to pass under the railway at Folly Bridge, the right again to join National Cycle route 65) adds about half a mile to the route....
