Help connect Sharnbrook

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Sharnbrook’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

A pleasant route following rights of way & some local knowledge to get into Riseley itself (popping out next to the local police station). As with previous reviewers, the A6 crossing is unpleasant, that said, with care it only takes a few minutes to ‘negotiate’. Several fields outside Riseley were ploughed & confident navigation is required, though the gpx file keeps you on the correct path....

For me the enjoyment of this walk was diminished by the failure of the large corporate entity that owns the land between the A6 and the edge of Riseley, to have reinstated the stretches of footpath that cross the (often vast) open fields, more than a month after harvest. Yesterday I found that the largest field had been recently re-ploughed, right up to the line of the footpath, which was helpful albeit that the pre-harvest surface of the footpath had not been reinstated in any way....

I was close to giving a 5 star rating, and I think the Bromham to Pavenham stretch, and the Pinchmill islands stretch just south of Sharnbrook would merit that rating.. I started from the Sharnbrook end. I found the Slow Ways map worked well to get me from the Swan with Two Nicks pub to the southern edge of the village, but was glad to have a compass and ordnance survey mapping to keep me on track on the stretch through the Pinchmill Islands to Brook Farm. At Brook Farm the track is very muddy when wet, and deeply rutted by tractor tyres.. After you exit the Golf Club the route forms two sides of a triangle (WSW then SE) to reach Pavenham, which I would suggest is only worth doing on a fine day when there are views to be seen from the farm track along the 85 metres high ridge (the highest point on the route). As the two previous reviewers have said, the real issue with this walk is a 50 metres stretch at the westernmost apex of the bend in the river Great Ouse 1 kilometre south west of Pavenham....

From the north the path closest to the river looks well trodden, but it crosses two areas of deep bog, and it is much easier to take a higher line through the trees, which is still pretty muddy but has no sucking bogs....

We turn left and pass the allotments, then cross Rushden Road and continue to the edge of a large field. Our path is less used than the one that crosses the bridge, and follows the left side of the railway along a field edge then between fences. Here we turn right down Back Lane, which crosses the railway on a high bridge and continues past farm buildings to a narrow band of woodland, where we turn left on what starts as a good track but becomes quite a muddy path. Eventually we emerge in a field, cross the brook and reach the edge of Sharnbrook, where the meeting point is a short pavement walk away....

Having crossed the road, the public footpath is only about 20 metres down the road, so there is less road walking than the route suggests....

We choose to walk along the river when going from Oakley to Pavenham as there is no need to walk on the road. Its a little bit confusing at the golf club but soon picked up the route again. Came across 2 stiles that were not very dog friendly just outside of Sharnbrook....

Starting in Bedford town centre it's a pavement all the way from Bedford to Clapham through to Oakley until you reach the train tracks and go through a field to reach a bridge leading to an exit near the memorial. Instead of following the road you can go through the fields next to the river and road (a sign said there were bull in the fields but when I walked through there weren't any) Past this its mostly just clear fields between the villages until you reach sharnbrook...

Lovely quiet walk, however some road walking with no path (not too much though). I did not walk all the way, I walked from Sharnbrook to Wymington....

This did not detract from the walk, but if you are wanting a quiet walk I suggest you do not do this at the weekends when Santa Pod is on....
