Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Rye’s Slow Ways.

They were very reminiscent of the North Devon coast path. The path follows the Royal Military Canal and the River Brede the whole way. An alternative path goes right upto the Castle which is another diversion I didn't do yesterday. I did however visit the dripping well at the head of Fairlight Glen and walked down the path from the small waterfall back to the route....

This is a challenging one to review fairly because when I did the walk there was a closure in Rye (which I- probably against best judgement- climbed over/under) that made the initial phase of the walk challenging....
ShortLegsLongWalk
Lovely open countryside, coastal views, windmills, historic villages, sculptures....

It's an interesting walk with plenty of characterful buildings, nice views, and lovely animals (including two ostriches in Peasmarsh). A few things to add: 1) the fingerpost is missing on Rectory Lane to point you over the stile. 2) there's no signage in a field shortly after that but you can just about see your route about 400m away diagonally across the field. 3) At Beckley rec ground just walk straight across to the gate in the distance, you can ignore the gpx route if you want to avoid a morass in winter. 4) The Horse and Cart pub in Peasmarsh has recently closed so use the Cock Inn or Jempsons cafe if you need food urgently, or just wait til Rye as there's loads more to choose from....

It can be a bit treacherous underfoot, and sometimes flooded in winter, between Smallhythe Place and Tilder Gill south of Tenterden but if you're ready for that then it isn't a problem....
Ricechrisb
It's a shame because the Woolpack Inn is well-worth a visit, it just isn't nice to reach....

As mentioned below, it's worth paying attention to the incline, there are a lot of steps in the stretch from Fairlight to Hastings. It's also very muddy in autumn/ winter so be sure to wear good sturdy waterproof shoes....

Those areas in Hastings Country Park have been repaired and now you can enjoy the whole of this route with ease....
Ricechrisb
The only reason I've dropped a star is because in a dry summer the Saxon Shore Path from Appledore to Ham Street is superior than the Royal Military Canal, in my opinion....

That can also be said for the Lydd Firing Range on the other side of the road....

This route takes you to the back of Fairlight and not along the coastal path....

The path from Rye to the coast follows the Brede River, starting by the Brede Sluice where the green grass path runs alongside the river. We then rejoined the sloway route after crossing the farms and just before the path moves to the road that follows the river. The pavement is safe and soon, before the road reaches Winchelsea the footpath is signed posted on the lefthand side of the road, running to the left of the Royal Military Canal. As you reach the coast the sloway veers right running parallel to the coast and the road and although on the map it shows running onto the right of the Canal, this path is definitely no longer there as the gardens back onto the water. Therefore, stay always on the path, with the canal on your right until you reach the road at Cliff End....
