Help connect Ryde

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ryde’s Slow Ways.

The route begins walking out of the town centre of East Cowes (shops, cafes, Waitrose, public loos and transport links) on the main road passing Osbourne House and out of town. There is a lovely but hilly section on quiet roads to the back of Wootton Bridge where you wind through the backs of a 1970s housing estate to come out at Wootton Creek....

For a short urban route, this has a wide range of architectural styles - tower blocks for student accommodation, and residential housing from the Georgian period to the present. This is followed by Southsea common and a view over the Solent, and then a hovercraft ride to - well, Ryde....

The route from Wootton to Newport is less special, I would suggest a detour via Binfield, walking along the Medina is nicer than going via the suburbs of Newport....

This is a great walk, but the path between Seaview and St Helens through the woods near Nodes Point Holiday Park is steep in places and one of the muddiest paths we’ve walked, and this is true even in the summer. There are actually warning signs up to wear appropriate shoes - and this advice should be followed! It is a pretty route though and nicer than the inland route....

Very good route, only reason it is not five star is because there is a slight bit where the route travels along major roads around the smallbrook stadium area....

I was happy I did the stretch through Priory Woods, but just be aware that it will be muddy and wet, and the other route option for this Slow Way takes a diversion around Priory Woods for this reason....
