Help connect Ripon
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ripon’s Slow Ways.

We downloaded the Harrip Two route because of the improved river walk at the end....
Eddie McDonagh
Beautiful walk through farmland and easy to follow the trail....
Robert Pearson
A lovely walk through farmland, easy to follow although a bit over grown in sections in summer...
Milo
although alongside the river Ure for much of the route the way was quite a pleasant and easy walk....

Tim Ryan added Ripbor two, a new walk from Ripon to Boroughbridge
Walk this routeAn interesting route, mostly secluded paths and lanes to the North and mostly paved route south of Ripley. A very good local store in Ripley....

I totally agree with the comments made by reviewer 1 that the detour from the river into Bishop Monkton is unnecessary unless you wish to call there for refreshments - there is a pub there. Also it is possible to continue on pavement along Bar lane between Boroughbridge and Roeckiffe. Both options make for a shorter and more direct equally enjoyable walk....
Tim Ryan
There is a wide variety of beautiful scenery with fantastic views of Nidderdale from the Panorama Walk out of Pateley Bridge, lovely woodland walking round Eavestone Lake and in Skell Bank Wood and the magnificent walk through Studley Deer Park, with views of Ripon Cathedral in the distance....
RCS
We walked from Boroughbridge to Ripon in mid June following the Slow Ways path, including the diversion through Bishop Monkton which is unneccesary unless you need to go into the village - the footpath continues alongside the river. There is a nature reserve (Ripon City Wetlands) between the canal, river and racecourse, and an alternative to keeping by the canal would be a slightly longer walk through the reserve and then along the river Ure to Hewick Bridge and up the river Skell into Ripon....

Great views, good pub at West Tanfield, very little road walking....
Tim Ryan
Mostly on roads, which are unpaved off the main roads but fairly quiet, fairly wide and with grass verges for the most part....
Tim Ryan
The path is now officially diverted to go round Ashbrook Farm (North of Bishop Monkton). A section of the path between Ashbrook Farm and the Ripon Canal has also been diverted3...

Mainly well signed, some footpaths in Hackness Woods paths aren't in very good condition but can be avoided by using the estate maintained footpaths which will eventually bring you out in the right place. 1 awkward ditch (see photo 1)just before going up good steps about 1.5 miles from Masham. Pub and shop at West Tanfield....

Descending along Whitcliffe Lane, after Whitcliffe Hall, watch out for a path on the left hand side leading into Whitcliffe Wood (see photo)....

The previous excellent review says almost all there is to say about this lovely walk and I have only a few additional comments....
Chrisl
The route leaves Harrogate on the Nidderdale Greenway, a Sustrans cycle/pedestrian asphalted path to Ripley, mainly built along the old railway line to Pateley Bridge. The path leaves the Nidderdale Way at High Cayton farm and continues on to Markington over a mixture of arable and grazing land for cows. The path continues round the cricket and football field, leaving the football field up 4 or 5 steep steps (in need of repair) towards Ingerthorpe where it joins the Ripon Rowel path on to Markington Hall. The route leaves the Ripon Rowel at Whitcliffe Hall farm and then follows a long very quiet single track road, with good views of Ripon Minster, to Hell Wath Nature reserve before dropping down to the River Skell for the final approach to Ripon....
RCS
A great route following the canal out of Ripon then fields, tracks and paths....
Ross
I had a problem with lovely cows in a field at Brearton, but this can be avoided by turning right instead of left at Brearton and taking the footpath on your left. This joins the other footpath after a few fields....
Sandra Blyton
Given four starts as it would not be suitable for buggies or wheel chairs....
Ross
Lovely countryside and some wide views. Places of interest (and refreshment) along the way....
