Connect Purley with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Purley to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Purley’s Slow Ways.

Personally I preferred this to PurKen 2: cowslips and less climbing over cows, steps and a bit of a view. I particularly enjoyed the slightly winding woodland path and especially the frequent glades which were brimming with cowslips....

It was a lovely day and rather than end my walk at Purley Station I decided to attempt a new greener version of this Slow Way (after Slow Way-ing from Coulsdon to Caterham and Kenley). I hoped for a way through Coulsdon Manor Golf Course, inspired by earlier chats with locals and lines on the Strava Heatmap....
Daisy C
Much greener than expected, what looks like roads on the map turned out to be green space between houses, and up Russel Hill ( a steady 13%gradient) there is a nice traffic- free path....

I’ve flagged for access because Stanley Park is not accessible from the Carshalton Beeches side. I had to double back which is not a good thing. I’ve made the new route which corrects this problem, and also fine tunes the road crossings at Purley....

Good South London urban route, possible refreshments at Woodcote Green and Carshalton Beeches....

It's a fairly hilly walk, first quite a bit of up and down, and then a long climb along a road to Selsdon....

A slow climb out of Wallington through residential streets, then a lovely walk through Roundshaw Downs, finishing with a downhill walk into Purley....
Derick Rethans
From Purley station (photo #1), the route follows a fairly busy road for a while, before going up a hill....

I walked this route from East Croydon to Purley, on a bright and sunny day, with the temperature just above 0°C. From East Croydon station, the route headed south and up a hill towards a lovely park (photo #1)....

Slow Ways Welcome Team added Sutpur two, a new walk from Sutton to Purley
Walk this routeIt’s a good clear route avoiding main roads - and it picks up 3 intermediate railway stations (South Croydon, Sanderstead, and Purley Oaks) on the way, in addition to the start and end ones....

Walked from Selsdon Clock to Purley Station, the section in the Sanderstead Plantation is unlit and a bit muddy but flat, but it's close to Addington Road that would be a fine alternative. There's a lot of undulation in the stairs in the section between the golf club and Grasmere Road, but you could level that out using Brancaster Lane if needed. Those sections also appeared to have well-maintained streetlights but I walked in the daylight....

It goes through the residential roads between Purley and Coulsdon and does involve some uphill. It is all via paths or sidewalks so quite firm underfoot. There is are a couple of footpaths that you need to keep an eye out for but otherwise it is fairly straightforward to follow on the map....

Soon after leaving the station (photo #1), there was a 100+ flight of stairs straight up to Cliff End (photo #2). This was the only *steep* bit up, but after walking along Cliff End (photo #3) and then down towards Downs Court Road, there is another uphillish section to where you then follow the public foot path (photo #4, #5) to the end of the nature reserve....
Derick Rethans
There's a couple of eat/shop options near Kenley Station, and a pub "The Kenley Hotel" with "Rooms available from £20". The route is along a steep sided valley, some slopes are inevitable, but this route is relatively gentle, considering, except those long steps. It seemed better than PurKen 1 in that direction and is far quieter than the main road joining Kenley and Purley stations....

It's possible to leave/enter Purley Station from the south side and join Warren Road without using the A22....

Mainly quiet side roads from Wallington to Roundshaw....

Steps at Sanderstead Station and Whitmead Close (over route of former railway). Pleasant area at Park Hill Recreation Ground before getting to East Croydon. I've added Purcro two to correct slight route error at Sanderstead Station....

Same as Purcro one but with correction to slight route error at Sanderstead Station. Good walk along mainly quiet roads. Toilets in Tesco at Purley (across A22)....

Shops at Woodcote Green, Stanley Park and Carshalton Beeches....
