Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Port Talbot’s Slow Ways.

As pointed out in other reviews, there is a little kink in the route at Margam, which deviates from the No 4 cycle route for a couple of hundred metres - it would be better to just follow the cycle route all the way. Photo 5 - The Orangery, Margam Park...

It’s a flat, functional route primarily following the national cycle network 4. Parts of the route were very industrial and provided some good (and a little unconventional) views....
Stuart Bain
Functional if uninspiring route which is mostly along cycle paths by some fairly busy roads...

A good wheeling route, but not a particularly interesting walking route. Photo 2 - The Neath Valley from the Briton Ferry Bridge...

Other than that it’s flat and wide all the way either on an off road cycle path running alongside the road, pavement or tiny off road (tarmac) section as you arrive in Port Talbot....

The route from Port Talbot is very urban and starts by following a cycleway alongside Harbour Way. (The only bit I would alter is an odd kink in the route that uses roads instead of a signposted cycleway. The cycleway is better.) It's all pretty easy and flat, and is adequately signposted for cyclists and Wales Coast Path walkers, but it's also just a case of walking past houses, with one bit alongside a sports field....

I looked at the first part of the route, from Port Talbot to the big roundabout near Margam Country Park, and on another day I looked at the route from the Kenfig dunes to Porthcawl. On another day I walked through the Kenfig dunes and picked up the Wales Coast Path on the other side of the Afon Cynffig, and headed in the direction of Porthcawl. If I could offer split star ratings, I'd give three stars for the route out of Port Talbot to Margam, and five stars for the route from Kenfig dunes to Porthcawl....

The route leaves the wood too early and it's better to stay on the woodland path and leave at Baglan Heights, then head down past the primary school at Blaenbaglan....
Paddy Dillon
A safe if unexciting cycle path mixed between segrated traffic lanes and traffic free routes, with some queiter lanes. Poorly maintained for wheels in some places particularly just outside Pyle....

Stuart Bain added Porpor two, a new walk from Port Talbot to Porthcawl
Walk this routeTakes a slightly odd detour up to to Amazon roundabout and another through the Bay campus rather than sticking to the main road and there's a lot of time spent on the cycle path that runs parallel to the dual carriageway at the Swansea end which is easy and fast on wheels but mildly unappealing on foot - for this stretch the route offered on the Swanea route along the canal path is nicer for the Port Tenant to Briton Ferry stretch....

Significantly slower starting at the Port Talbort end because it climbs right up Mynydd Dinas to the national coast path along the top - there are other paths lower down along the side of the hill which all meet up. There is one odd detour through a the housing at Baglan instead of the waymarked Coast Path route through the same estate. This part of the route was completely new to me and is def a way I would routinely use as an alternative to the canal path which is my current usually walking route into Neath....
