Latest Updates
This route links the northern Cardiff suburb of Pontprennau to central Caerphilly, and my wife and I walked it from Pontprennau→Caerphilly on 30 May 2024. Once the route leaves Pontprennau and reaches its rural section, it is very good, offering beautiful paths and fields, views over the Bristol Channel and some lovely houses and horses to look at along the way....

A lovely walk linking the Pontprennau suburbs of Cardiff to the city of Newport, mainly through fields, lanes and the open spaces of Tredegar Park fields. Photo 1 - The path through the fields after leaving the woods by the M4...

Direction: Pontprennau to Caerphilly. After leaving the fields and lanes and entering the woodlands, the path zig-zags up the mountain. Photo 4 - Brick path through Wern Ddu woods...

A functional route through the suburbs of Cardiff, from the newer estates around Pontrprennau, through the older establisheed areas such as Llanedyrn and Penylan, on through the city areas like Roath and finally the centre itself....

Excellent walk through fields and woodland, which passes the ruined Ruperra Castle and the nearby Ruperra Motte. Photo 1 - Draethen village from the edge of Coed Craig Ruperra...

danravenellison added Pondra three, a new walk from Pontprennau to Draethen
Walk this routeI found this a really interesting cross-section through Cardiff, going through suburbia, estates and inner-city housing. I loved the massive heron mural on Plasnewydd Road and all the international restaurants when leaving Cardiff's city centre. The route could have been drawn a little better where it starts in Pontprennau, but I'm sure you'll manage it!...

OK, so I'm going to review this route as "maybe" good enough to be in the Slow Ways network because of an access issue.....
danravenellison
This is a great Slow Way route that I thoroughly enjoyed walking. I've shared it to deal with a couple of access/accuracy issues with Pondra Two. I'd 100% walk it again!...

Very easy terrain mostly through housing estates and alongside roads. Quiet and safe....

A pleasant and easy walk through residential areas between the city centre and outskirts to the east. Alwyas pavements when at the side of the road. a perfectly good route....
Tim Ryan
It is easy to go around this roundabout with care and then continue north following the footpath and private road through the gated community, Staying on the footpath you rejoin the route at the Nant Fawr stream ST 22537 84395....

MaddyT added Pontnew two, a new walk from Pontprennau to Newport (Gwent)
Walk this routeMost of this route is fine but there are access issues at: 1) Pontprennau - the footpath alongside the A4232 is no longer in use 2) Around Home Farm - better to stay on the road/track...

This route is fairly easy to navigate: paved paths through parks in Newport and well-marked footpaths. There’s a long stretch of quiet road SW of Bassaleg - I saw more cyclists and horse riders than cars. In Pontprennau, use the path around the side of B&Q....
MaddyT
This route is impossible because there's no access across the M4 at the point shown - the road that appears to cross the motorway is actually a dead-end either side. See Pondra2, a much better route....

MaddyT added Pondra two, a new walk from Pontprennau to Draethen
Walk this routeMy only moment of confusion was after leaving the paved road through Cefn Mably Country Park: the path heads NW along the edge of a field as far as a gate into a wooded area by a stream....

MaddyT added Caepon two, a new walk from Caerphilly to Pontprennau
Walk this routeThis is a good route along clearly marked well-used paths through woods and grassy fields. However, there are a couple of potential hazards: 1) Just S of the M4 you need to jump/splash across the stream at Nant Glandulas. It was easy today but may be trickier after heavy rain. 2) Care is needed on the tiny stretch of St Mellons Rd between the footpath to Malthouse Farm and the start of the pavement: a few metres of narrow road, blind bends and oncoming traffic....
