Help connect Petworth
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Petworth’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
I walked this route solo on an overcast day at the beginning of September. All in all this is a very attractive route along quiet paths well away from roads and traffic noise. There were two points where the route took off from a very quiet lane to take footpaths only to rejoin the same lane a little further up the road....

A really nice long walk (took me 28km and 6 hours including a lunch pause). - Some nice sections of the Monarch's Way, Serpent Trail and a small part of South Downs Way. - Former phone box near Sutton providing leaflets with local information and a large scale local map - The White Horse Inn in Sutton which looks like it would be a nice place for some lunch and refreshment (though I didn't try it)...

The route passes through Pulborough Brooks RSPB reserve in the flood plain of the River Arun. It also passes three interesting churches at Wiggonholt, Pulborough and Stopham. At Pulborough, rather than walking along the main road to the station, I'd take the footpath opposite Allfreys Wharf up the hill to Old Rectory Lane then head to the church, crossing the A29 there then heading down Church Place to meet the plotted route by the bridge over the railway line....
Bostal Boy
You cross the A29 which is very busy with fast traffic, but it’s only single carriageway so fairly easy to cross safely....

It is long though (I clocked it at 22.66 km), and it's odd that Pulborough isn't a SlowWays Place - it's bigger than Storrington and would make a good stopping off point. As the first review says though, there are lots of places which might be waterlogged, notably the RSPB at Pulborough Brooks and could then be impassba,.e, but easy to find routes around....

Hugh Hudson added Petwes two, a new walk from Petworth to West Chiltington Common
Walk this routeI'd second the point about the steps up-and-over the A29, which is was a little overgrown and brambly at the time, but overall this really is a great walk....

Walked from Loxwood to Petworth as the second leg of Billingshurst --> Loxwood --> Petworth on a very sunny day 14-06-2022. No photos of the second half as I was yomping hard to catch a bus at Petworth!...

Bostal Boy added Petbil three, a new walk from Petworth to Billingshurst
Walk this routeI thought this was a glorious walk which probably trumps PETBIL Two by leaving Billingshurst by a more amenable path. The route is along field paths and woodland paths, picking up sections of the Sussex Diamond Way, the Wey South Path and the Serpent Trail along the way....
Bostal Boy
This quite a long route mostly on footpaths and bridleways. There are a couple of pubs at the Petworth end, and the White Hart at Stopham Bridge is a good halfway point....
robblack
The route takes you through several small villages and past many chocolate box thatched cottages, finishing with a climb up onto the rolling parkland of Arundel Castle....
TheIncidentals
Just north of Hook Copse, the footpath veers off to the right on the map, but is not there on the ground, however it was easy to find by walking a bit further East and crossing over to where the footpath ought to have been....

Nearest alternative pubs are the Halfway Bridge, a mile north of Selham, or the Badgers (recommended) beyond Duncton Common on the A285. Very muddy after recent rain between (say) Hurlands Farm (Selham) and the start of Duncton Common...

One footpath is closed and it takes you on to the Petworth lorry bypass route which is dangerous especially as there is no footpath and the traffic is fast!...
BecciWest
The biggest problem with this route is near the Petworth end, it goes on to Kingspit Road which is the lorry bypass route for Petworth and there is no pavement, very dangerous even if only for around 50 meters....
