Help connect Petersfield
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Petersfield’s Slow Ways.

Walk this routeFrom Buriton to Horndean included lovely views and other than a bit of a pull up slopes in QE Park and towards the end was not particularly strenuous....

I ran this route on a hot overcast Saturday in mid June, after a good month without rain. I would suggest stopping this route at Rothercombe Farm and swapping to Corpet One, which will take you across some fields to a bridge over the A3 and take you into a nice part of Petersfield and straight down to the shops and station....

There is a much straighter route mostly on public footpaths across the south of Midhurst Common, through The Warren over to the Minsted road, skirting the south of the sand pit to Fitzhall, over to Dumpford via Goldrings Farm, along the old railway line to avoid the road, then a short section of road in Nyewood before picking up the Serpents trail across to Down Park Farm and finally into Petersfield via Ryefields. This is easy to navigate and there are refreshments along the way at Sky Park and sometimes also at Henry Warren Hall in Nyewood....

I walked this route from Petersfield to Horndean. Very quickly, the route gets out into open countryside, where the paths wind their way through rolling hills and valleys, all green and lush when I walked in May....

It's a nice route except for a short piece that uses the A32 with no path....

I didn't realise at the time but the part after Old Winchester Hill where you join the road (Hayden Lane?) actually has a footpath inside the Old Winchester Hill boundary which I could have used....

- I agree that a slight change to the route to avoid some of the B2070 on the approach to Rake would be more sensible. As others have said, just utilise the road alongside the primary school to approach Rake, rather than having to cross and walk along the busy B road. - The walk along Harting Combe Road (south of Hill Brow) was the least walking friendly section of the route for me. Although quieter than a B-road, walking the route this way round meant a short uphill section with a couple of blind bends....

It was quite hilly in places as you'd expect in this area but the Staunton Way was well maintained and the rest of the route was well sign posted. It's quite an exposed route so I wouldn't want to do it if it was very wet or hot, but on a sunny October morning it was glorious....

Most of the roads are single track back roads so quite quiet, however there were some parts on bigger roads without pavements so care is needed. The Serpent Trail is used both coming out of Petersfield and going into Midhurst, but make sure you turn off at the right point....

It follows a mix of the Serpent Trail and Sussex Border Path, but you need to be careful as you keep swapping and need to be ready to turn off onto other footpaths too....

I also missed a very hidden footpath onto Petersfield Golf Club (see photo 1). There is a short section on road without a pavement on Forest Road in Liss. When I got to Greatham, instead of turning left along Longmoor Road I turned right and then went through the woods, rather than follow the road (photo 2)....

An outstanding route, passing over Old Winchester Hill. Great views more or less throughout. Very close to the route I would have suggested....

Generally this is a good route, but there are a couple of points where a slight modification would make it safer to walk, as there are a few road sections / crossing points that are a bit dangerous or tricky. A slight route change along the side road at SU 80865 27979 might be preferable....

I walked this route from Petersfield to Alton on Wednesday 23rd June 2021 using GPS. Between Petersfield and Selbourne, the route mostly follows Hangers Way. I deviated from the route to stay off road and I can definitely recommend it. The route from Farringdon to Alton takes you alongside the A32, A31 and through the town. It also takes you through Chawton which does have a tea room and Jane Austen's house but if you prefer a quieter, more rural way I can recommend the path to the east of the route from Upper Farringdon across fields towards the B3006 and Truncheaunts and under the A31 at the B3004....
