Help connect Ormskirk
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ormskirk’s Slow Ways.

Turning onto an unpaved road once we're beyond Ruff Wood, it becomes paved around the corner as we're passing houses. It's best to use the tarmacced path through Kiln Park (again the route map and OS maps show footpaths where there aren't really any across just grass), and past the school and church, onto paved roads once more. A few more roads, and we join a tarmac footpath heading uphill and under the jetties of houses. Once over the footbridge, a tarmac footpath up to the houses, where we join another footpath that takes us past the amphitheatre and, once over a little bridge, up past the playgrounds and onto the paved plateau of the library and Concourse, with its shops and bus station, and this route's terminus....

Much of the route follows shared use paths so it's a nice way to cycle between Ormskirk and Burscough but less confident cyclists may choose to stay on the pavement along High Lane....

Walk this routeThe least accessible section - which follows the old railway out of Ormskirk station and is heavily overgrown with some steep steps up to the bridge - can be bypassed through Waterworks Road or Nursery Avenue to Greetby Hill....

After a third of a mile, we're back into fields, before ending on the main road near Stanley Gate, a big pub on a busy crossroads. And those wishing to avoid the unpaved section should continue along Ormskirk Road from Scarth Hill; it's paved all the way to Stanley Gate....

Staying on until the bridge at Lydiate, up the steps and over the bridge (unpaved), and then through Lydiate, passing the Weld Blundell pub and shops. Past houses and farms, the path is a mix of footpath and farm track, passing Walsh Hall until we meet the road....
Hiking Historian
Agree with the previous reviewer: the route from Maghull to the canal isn't detailed enough, and it is much better to stay on the canal until Lydiate rather than come off early and start a road walk....

Walk this routeThis is a wonderful walk, but be warned that the signposting at the Downholland end is non existent, and the wiggle through various buildings is also not signposted. If I go back I will try and put up some photos to help....

Plenty interesting things to see like old railway track beds and nice countryside between Skelmersdale and Ormskirk. Can be a bit muddy in places....

Part of the walk is along a disused railway line which has been designated as a public footpath and named The Smith Way....
Eric Wilson
Mostly a wander along an old railway (at time of writing, blocked in places by fallen trees), and across some fields, often wet and muddy. That said, it's a good way of connecting the two places; just a shame it excludes wheeled users....

The footpath that starts in Sandy Lane actually finishes in Pygons Hill Lane where you have to turn right (not left!) to get to Sudell Lane....
