Help connect Nuneaton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Nuneaton’s Slow Ways.

Leaving Astley behind, the route takes you past the old Castle gardens and northwards to Robinson's End. It's here that the second more urban half of the walk begins. The route takes you pretty much through the whole length of the suburb of Stockingford....

You need to keep your senses peeled as you cross the road bridge (photo 12) just after leaving the canal at Marston Junction as there is no dedicated footpath, the road traffic is controlled by lights so you can use these to give you a bit of confidence as you cross. Got to say though, I think whoever designed this route missed a trick by not utilising the Wharf Meadows route immediately on the left after you cross the Marston Jct road bridge....

Leaving the meeting point in Nuneaton, we go a short distance west along Queens Road, then right onto Harefield Street and left onto Newdegate Street. We follow Coleshill Street, crossing South Street with care (or using the zebra crossing further left) then past the post office to Long Street, where we cross, turn left then right up Market Street to reach the Atherstone meeting point in the Market Place....

I agree with David that the section along the A4254 should make it clear that we walk on the south side, because the pavement on the north side goes missing in a place where crossing is awkward. Nutts Lane only has a pavement on the west side, but the traffic lights at the canal bridge make it easy to cross there, and we head east along the Ashby canal around a big bend and under the A5, where there is a pub on the far side of the canal. We follow the path around the edge of a housing estate to emerge on Crowhill Road, which we cross and head right along the pavement....

A lovely wander along the canal - the other reviews have covered the detail I think! Direct train between the two places so you can return to your car easily at the other end!...

My only complaint with the route, the section that prevents it from being 5 star was the section in Attleborough crossing the A4254. Also the plotting follows the road over the railway, rather than the pedestrian footbridge but it is obviously wrong and the footbridge is the clear option to take, so it wouldn't make the route a failure....

Starting in Nuneaton town centre the route soon leads into Riversley Park, before passing the Pingle Athletic, Track and heading along Coventry Road toward the canal. Once on the canal the towpath leads directly to the outskirts of Bedworth at Marston Junction, where the Coventry Canal and Ashby Canal meet. Once off the canal the route goes along some residential streets towards Bedworth town centre....

The route starts in Nuneaton town centre and leads out of the town towards Attleborough, this section mainly follows a roads....

Once on the Coventry Canal it's a straight, and easy to navigate, route towards Atherstone....

David Sanderson added Athnun two, a new walk from Atherstone to Nuneaton
Walk this routeThe route to the canal is by pavement along some main roads, there are plenty of crossings and it's not long before you are on the Coventry Canal. The route from canal to meeting point is direct but safe and Atherstone has its own array of stops and shops for you to peruse....

Starting in Bedworth, the route to the canal is via quiet residential streets rather than the main road....
David Sanderson
The route starts by the public library and takes you through Nuneaton on footpaths on to a canal. The only changes I would make to the route is to perhaps start it at Nuneaton's train station, which is only few minutes walk from the start point, and end it in Bedworth town centre (still passing Bedworth's train station) which is only a couple of hundred yards beyond the train station....
Hurryhome
A simple route, no great elevation changes and pleasant along the canal side but would be very difficult for wheelchair users....
David Martin
The next section was alongside the Coventry canal, initially through countryside and then alongside residential areas on the outskirts of Nuneaton....
