Help connect Northwood
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Northwood’s Slow Ways.

I continued on this route from Watrad 3 by following the Cycle Route 6 (passing Tesco and into Oxhey Park where there's the Tasty Bean Café with toilets). Ebury Way was quiet and tree-lined. There are steps after passing Hampermill Lake and you need to be alert while crossing the Golf Course....

From Watford, (photo #1) a section along residential streets and alongside Wiggenhall Road is annoying, but once you get along the river Colne and the Ebury Way (photo #2, #3), it's mostly excellent — both in terms of surface, and greenery....

You will then see a footpath entrance on your left which leads on to the grounds of Moor Park Golf Club. The footpath takes you directly across the golf course, which felt a little hazadous at times. You definitely have right of access through the golf course, but I got the distinct impression that the golfers didn't love having us there! When you exit the golf course, cross over Moor Lane and head towards Batchworth roundabout....

The route then runs on pavements along Moor Lane and Sandy Lodge Lane. Cross underneath the Metropolitan Line at Sandy Lodge Lane and turn right on to Askew Road. Shortly after this leads on to a footpath that runs alongside the railway line and Sandy Lodge Golf Course....

I hadn't realised from the map that the route went under the roundabout near the start in Harrow but was glad to be able to avoid the busy roads there!...

Prestwick Road in South Oxhey may be difficult to cross in heavy traffic, but there is a traffic island near the route which I used to make it easier....

Cut-through paths keep you away from roads but are made very narrow by trees on the path. This was a lovely walk with lots of greenery and little roadside walking....

After coming out of the woods it is then narrow passageways between two fences on a muddy path with lots of nettles....
Derick Rethans
It started off with a few residential streets in Northwood, but then it crosses a gold course (watch out for balls!) before it starts following the Hillingdon Trail for a while through Ruislips Wood....

My favourite part was the quaint town of Pinner, and my least favourite the end underneath the roundabout at Harlow. I guess it gets the job done....

It's not very long though before you walk along Moor lane, which does have a slightly annoying pavement (or rather, lack thereof)....

There are a couple of roads - Church Street in Rickmansworth and Batchworth Lane near Northwood - which may be difficult to cross at busy times. However, this route was very easy to follow, sticking to quieter roads and footpaths where possible. Underfoot I found it generally easygoing, with a potentially muddy section at the bottom of Sandy Lodge golf course....

Again across a road into Bayhurst Wood, muddy paths, and open woods....

First a long rail-side path (unlit at night), then a golf course and farm fields....

Little passageways between houses, then tunnels of trees through Oxhey woods and a long narrow passage down into Northwood....

Old Pinner village, Victorian town houses, 30's metro, 50's boxes, 70's low-rise blocks, to modern....

Equally, there was a long stretch of pavement walking down what starts off as a fairly busy road in Watford which could have been avoided by going through Watford Fields and using the Ebury Way....

I do mean 'legs' however - the nature of the forest trail (upturned roots, steep rises, potential mud) make this section much less usable for wheels. Travelling on foot, I enjoyed this route, but I suspect wheels will find some sections a struggle....

This is a beautiful and easy to follow route, which runs mostly through woodland and green spaces....
