Boom! Northolt is 100% connected!
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
Every one of Northolt’s four Slow Ways has a route that’s been walked and reviewed positively at least three times, and surveyed. Scroll down to explore them, or help connect another place
Give a hike!Help connect Northolt
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Northolt’s Slow Ways.

May I just start off by saying this route takes you through a wild beaver colony!...

There's a fairly level path through a (disused) car park which meets the over-the-top path in 450 metres....

It's 800 metres following the Hillingdon Way footpath passing Willow Tree Pond and up Glencoe Road....

I did see a beaver canal, a dam and freshly bitten tree stems in Paradise Fields but not the beavers or kits but that was a stretch, especially in daytime, so I'll take it as a successful mission!...

And as Southall to Northolt now has this verified route I'm adding a new version without that problem. Earlier that day I'd tested a new green route from Wembley to Northolt, as NorWem 1 was already verified but sounds quite dull....

This is a nicer canal walk than other parts of the grand union canal as there are lots of green spaces either side (which can be explored) for most of the walk and less urban and light industry. It is then a short walk to Belvue Park and you can follow the gravel path (photo 3)....
Aamwalk
After another parade of shops on Whitten Avenue West, you walk up onto a bridge to cross the tube, where there was quite a fair view (photo #5), before going past Sudbury Town tube station (photo #6) to continue along Harrow Road, and along Barham Park (photo #7) to end up at the busy Wembley Central station....

After having left Harrow-on-the-Hill, the route then proceeds along the busy Northolt road for a bit, which it turns away from just before South Harrow station. You cross the rail way and the Harrow sidings, and the rest of the route is along the busy-ish Mandeville Road (photo #3) to end up at the finish at Northolt tube station....

The route starts at Southall, and then continues along it's busy broadway towards the Grand Union Canal, which it follows for most of the walk. It's a pleasant route to follow, with plenty of wild life and boaters to keep your attention, although it can get a little monotonous at times....

This path wasn't passable due to large amounts of water on the path, and my boots weren't high enough. On the other side of the fairly busy West End Road, the route continues first over a tarmac path, then a gravel path, and finally a dirt path through the woods, towards the Yeading Brook Meadows, where the paths were decidedly muddy, but still passable. It is mapped to cut off a corner near Park Road/ St Andrews Road, and although the path is there, I didn't spot it, and instead walked around the construction area....

The other end of the route also has Battle of Britain connections, though the Polish War Memorial at the Northolt roundabout on the A40 is not on the route itself....

After the Wembley/Sudbury section, most of the route is through suburban streets, though there's one short section of greenery through Horsenden Hill. The route is predominantly through housing built in the inter-war period, during the large-scale expansion of London suburbs. These are punctuated occasionally by the appearance of small parades of shops, like the one in the picture in Sudbury....

There is a new grit path which by-passes the marked route (red line on photo), the marked path is across rough grass but you get to see the layout of a 13thC manor and a beautiful church....

I enjoyed this route- particularly the climb up to Harrow on the Hill....

On the other side take the small gate next to the big gate across a building site on a well-made diverted path. There is then a long section through suburban residential roads of North Hillingdon (if roads are not your thing, take the first part of Uxbhar2 which comes within 120m of this path by Freezeland Covert). At the South end of Ten Acres join the Dog Rose Ramble path left across the Golden Bridge, there is a good path past the West London Shooting Grounds, then across a busy road to a signed path next to an Adventure Golf center (Ankylosaurus!)....
Strider
After leaving Harrow town center there is a steep (28%) climb through a park to St Mary's Church whose spire is synonymous with Harrow-on-the -Hill....

There is a short section alongside Horsenden Hill and I was tempted to take a detour through the woods....
