Help connect Neston

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Neston’s Slow Ways.

The walk takes you down to the Wirral Way and then along to Neston, taking a detour to walk along the front at Parkgate where there are pubs, coffee or tea shops, ice cream and fish and chips....

Walk this route

It is easy to see how this route earned its snail - a route that takes in pretty villages, scenic views and a variety of terrains, and provides multiple options for breaks and refreshments along the way. There are a number of food/toilet options directly on the route, from supermarkets/convenience stores in Neston and Shotton, to pubs in Little Neston and Shotton and cafes in Denhall and Puddington....

Burton is a lovely little village, but the road through it, and away, is more unpaved roads, hedges on each side, proving to be blind corners in places. The path takes an unnecessary kink around a field before the bridge (much easier to stay on the main path following the line of the old railway), but this route properly shows the means of which to navigate the confusing nature of the two Shotton stations to reach the main road beyond....

The path through Little Neston is along quiet unpaved roads, which are safe enough to use and often used by walkers. Burton is a lovely little village, but the road through it, and away, is more unpaved roads, hedges on each side, proving to be blind corners in places....

You can walk directly alongside the railway from the northbound (west side) platform of the high-level station next to the start of the route. This path continues over the low-level railway line, and descends a flight of stairs onto the low-level station. You then need to cross under the high-level line to reach the cycle track that goes through a narrow cycle barrier, then cross the River Dee on the east side of the railway bridge....

Urban walks at each end, but the middle does go through some lovely countryside. Due to the terrain, it's foot only as it passes through fields and a variety of gates....

Where on pavements in urban areas, all have ramps or lowered kerbs, and where there are gates or barriers, there's a good metre clearance, so all but the larger motorised wheelchairs will get through. Starts and ends at accessible stations, both with shopping areas....

Walk this route

Route is mostly walkable, especially along the Wirral Way, but the section in Sutton Hall is now a new housing estate, and the paths marked on the map (OS and SlowWay) are no longer in existence. Makes more sense to carry on through Sutton. I'll submit and walk an amended route in the near future....

The Neston end may be too muddy, and lots of kissing gates, for bikes or wheelchairs, and there are pinch gates and stairs at Shotton station, but rest of the route is along a good stretch of quiet road or wide paths, with a section of boardwalk. Despite a brief excursion through an industrial estate, it's a lovely walk along a nice stretch of the Dee salt marsh....

I concur with the other reviewers: the diversion down Boathouse Lane is mostly unnecessary unless you're going to the pub or into Parkgate for an ice cream! That said, it's a pleasant short coastal route on a path that mostly runs along the old railway of the Wirral Way, which is always a good walk....

Walk this route

A good little walk, with a variety of "under-foot" conditions including Un-adopted roads, fields, disused railway and hidden urban routes, one suggestion though, when reaching the left turn off Wood Lane continue across Boathouse Lane past Backwood Farm/Hall to the Golf Course and turn left there on the footbath down to the Wirral Way, makes it a little more interesting. Great views across the Dee Estuary to Flint....

Walk this route

An easy walk that for most of it's length follows an established paved cycle route, saying that the first mile or so down to the Dee Marshes doesn't, the last part of this section to the bottom of Marshlands Road and The Harp Inn can be very muddy when wet, The route then follows the edge of the Marshes (popular with bird watchers) to Deeside, the section through the Ind. Est. shouldn't spoil your enjoyment....

Dermot Byrne

A straightforward route that is flat and mostly paved although you do need to watch out for speeding bikes and those cyclists who also don't ring their bells to warn you....

The flight of steps that are on the route from the Heswall bus station side would be a wheelchair deterrent although there are not that many of them in the flight so shouldnt be an issue for any able bodied walkers.
