Connect Nantyglo with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Nantyglo to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?
Give a hike!Help connect Nantyglo
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Nantyglo’s Slow Ways.

Walked from Ebbw Vale to Nantyglo. No signposts on this route so be sure to have a map or GPS handy. Also, watch out for flying golf balls!...

A couple of the styles around the golf course are conventional (Photo 1 - I`ve never seen a carpeted style before!), but there are also a couple at the point where you leave the course on to the lane taking you down into Nantyglo, where you have to duck under (Photo 3). Photo 1 - Conventional style (with carpet) on the West Mon golf course....

Also, leaving the open moor, to enter the fields heading towards Blaen yr Ystruth, the gate is tied, so a little gate jumping is needed here....

Walk this routeIf time allows, there is quite a bit of industrial heritage in the area, but off the direct route - including the Nantyglo Round Towers - the last fortified buildings constructed in Wales during the industrial revolution....

I have drawn up another route, Nantbla2 to avoid this and the minor point below. The route into Blaenavon is not very well drawn and there is an access issue on the edge of Forgeside. The route is not clear, but it looks like it indicates a path through some land that is barred, but there is a path through the backs of Forgeside, which takes you through the rugby field and then out onto a track into Blaenavon, but just a minor diversion....

I walked it as part of a longer Slow Ways walk between Barry and Hay - one of my favourite walks to date....

Walk this routeThis is a good route that I managed to follow, but it's not walkable as drawn. Like Paul, I couldn't find the path behind Waun Ebbw Road. Happy to update this review if you can correct me on this....

Walk this routeI created and walked it in response to the issues Paul had on Nanbla One, although I think it would be great if someone checked that route again too. I'd certainly walk this route again....

I couldn`t find the path from Waun Ebbw Road, that`s supposed to cut through to the fields behind the houses, so I followed the road to the end of the houses and turned left on to another road to rejoin the path, which crosses the road and on through another housing estate, until it reaches the bridge over the main A467 road. After the bridge, the next section follows Farm Road, which is a quiet lane with housing on the left, but nice views over the fields to the right....
Paul Chilcott
After crossing the main A467 road, a farm track takes you up through the fields on the lower slopes of the mountain and past some sheep holding pens, eventually leading to a small wood. Once on the next farm track, it`s more straight forward to find the way into Blaina. Coming from the Blaina direction, it was a little easier to find the way into the wood, but it`s still a jungle in there, with no discernible path through it - you just have to make your own....
