The pavement walk out of Mountsorrel drags a bit, and I used the riverside path between the A6 bridge and Cossington Lane/Syston Road. There are a few steps up to the road, and we use the road bridge to cross the canal then continue on the towpath. We cross the river Wreake at a footbridge and head south under the Leicester bypass, then cross the canal using the road bridge on Wanlip Road. Eventually we cross the Soar on a footbridge to join the main riverside track, passing the National Space Centre and the ruined Abbey....

The walk continued safely off road along a path over the hedge, although having spotted it on the OS map I nearly missed the start. I would therefore go along with Hugh’s suggestion of considering the path used by Marlou-2 although that would miss the pleasant pasture north of Clover Cloud (this sounds far better than the pleasant pasture south of Stinking Wood). The path after the subway may be off route but we have no choice but to follow it and it is surfaced....

The route out of Mountsorrel could be shortened easily, either by using the Castle Hill path or the path that goes up right of the church, but in any case the Leicestershire Round path is reached quickly enough. I didn't investigate the shortcut path just before Bradgate Lane which looks slightly shorter than staying on the bridlepath. There is also an option to take the path left around the Bradgate Park car park rather than walking through it (the car park has a toilet building a short distance off route). I am not convinced that using the Round west of John's Lee Wood is the best or easiest route into Markfield - there is a more direct route that involves crossing the A50 on pelican crossings (see Marlou two)....
Hugh Hudson
The northern section is a country walk which has three stiles, the only ones on the whole route, there could also be cattle in the fields here. The River Soar is also a navigation so there is a towing path alongside but the high quality cycle track surface stays with the river where there are twists and turns that may extend the walk. Plus it would avoid the enclosed path around the marina and perhaps offer a better surface along the cycle track....

Walk this routeA very pleasant route with long sections alongside the river and the canal as well as lakeside walking. An easy-to-follow route, which is well signed and easy walking. Plenty of opportunity for wildlife spotting and virtually all traffic free outside the City....

I walked MouSil Two and passed the faulty A6 crossing which was obviously impossible, involving trespass and risk to life. I’m not sure why two of the previous three reviewers appear to have said this route is good enough, given the negative reviews....

I walked MouSys Two and passed the faulty A6 crossing of this route, which was obviously impossible, involving trespass and risk to life. Use MouSys Two which is fine....

We walked MOUSIL 2 yesterday, and that route, which is identical to this one apart from using a safe A6 crossing through the underpass further south, is fine, and has been snailed thanks to the Leicester swarm weekend, In my view this route and MOUSYS 1 should be removed from the site....

We then follow the towpath through the bridge and out of the town, through fields and woodland past the marina, crossing the canal where it rejoins the Soar and following the right bank to Barrow Road. Here we cross the bridge left and turn right back to the canal, where we cross another bridge and follow the right bank to Mill Lane. The best trodden line does not follow the main road beyond Betty Henser's Lane but goes straight ahead to the river, where we turn right, and follow the riverside path under the road bridge and past a couple of fields to a bridge, which we cross (steps on both sides)....

There is also a stepped footbridge over Pilling’s Lock at one point, plus a narrow bridge and a field crossing, so it’s a tricky route for wheels....

I especially enjoyed the quirky cottage names (Dolls House and Rice Pudding Cottage were my favourites) Full review and photos to follow....

We cross the car parks opposite then turn left along the surfaced path beyond the second car park, then right through a residential estate, Beyond Leander Close we go left a short distance to find the signposted path through the small wood parallel to the A6. Beyond the underpass we go left a short distance to find the popular path into the nature reserve (not marked as a right of way on the OS map)....

I walked this route with Mary and Hugh on 12/11/22 as part of the slow ways swarm. This is a short, direct and enjoyable route connecting Mountsorrel to Sileby! (full review and photos to follow)...

We cross the car parks opposite then turn left along the surfaced path beyond the second car park, then right through a residential estate, Beyond Leander Close we go left a short distance to find the signposted path through the small wood parallel to the A6. Where the river turns right, we cross the field ahead half-right and follow the obvious path through the pretty Cossington Meadows, following the Leicestershire Round route into the village past the church. At the A46 we turn right along the edge of the field until we come to an underpass, where we cross under the main road and turn right to the old bridge over the river Wreake....

The route from Mountsorrel leads through a couple of car parks and along an offroad path through housing, to a pretty, wooded, but noisy path alongside the busy A6. The route then crosses some more fields and goes through Upper Marsh nature reserve, where we spotted a bird-spotter....

I walked from from Mountsorrel to Syston with Hugh and Mary on 13.11.22. This route takes in bits of waterways and open fields. I loved traversing Crossington Meadows (lots of birds about!) and the lakes are magical....

The detour from the south starts at Cossington Lane at SK 954 129 and goes down the steps (shown in the first photo) onto the riverside path, continues north with the river on the right until after 300 m you pass through a gate and then go diagonally left to a yellow marker by the A6 underpass where you re-join the route out onto Loughborough Road. This takes you down to the riverside path, continue to Cossington Lane and back on route. However, this was an otherwise excellent route, easy to follow, easy to walk with riverside and lakeside paths....

Ken added Moulei two, a new walk from Mountsorrel to Leicester
Walk this routeI haven't walked this route but making a pre-walk assessment I'm confident that the crossings of the A6 and A46 are unsatisfactory. The route could be amended to use a nearby bridge for the A46 but I see no solution for a safe crossing of the A6 dual carriageway at the location proposed....

Only really a route for walkers as many stiles and a very rocky path in one place so not bike friendly either. Very picturesque in places....

The route mapped here is not correct when leaving The Green at Mountsorrel. I would give this route a star rating of 5 for walking however, you would find it difficult to bike in places where large stones have been used to mend path - also many stiles....
