Help connect Mauchline
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Mauchline’s Slow Ways.

The first section heading out of Mauchline goes through a lovely woodland stretch, with the footpath running above the river....

We walked this route on a rainy September Sunday, which sadly hampered the views, though on a clear day there should be excellent vistas of the surrounding countryside. Walking south from Kilmarnock, it takes a little while to get out of the town, but this section is well paved and simple to navigate. Once past the bypass, the route is much nicer on country lanes that roll downhill to Mauchline....

Leaving Mauchline, the start of the route through the woodland is particularly beautiful, walking alongside the River Ayr....

We walked this route in mid-September on a wet afternoon which sadly hampered visibility, but the route is easy to navigate....

The first section through the woodland is particularly nice, and the path is very good....

Due to low cloud, we didn't get much of the views beyond this point(!) but the going was steady and easy on a very quiet rural road, with verges if necessary. The decent into Mauchline is equally easy and straightforward, with a number of food options in the town....

I walked this route with another person on a cool and blustery day in early June 2024. The route begins in the centre of Mauchline and follows Station Road and Haugh Road until it joins the River Ayr Way at Haughyett. Leaving Catrine, the route departs from the River Ayr Way, heading southeast on the B705. After quite a long, uphill section, the route leaves the B705 just before Auchinleck and enters the village via reclaimed industrial land (now informal parkland) and housing estates....

Review of Slow Ways Route Kilmau 2 (Kilmarnock to Mauchline two). The route begins in Kilmarnock town centre and initially follows the Kilmarnock Water to and through Howard’s Park. There are several farm gates to negotiate along this section but after about ten minutes, the road is regained. There is then an easy section, although along a slightly busier road which requires some care, until the Mauchline National Burns Memorial comes into view....

Possibly this route's River Ayr Way start, combined with the original route for the rest would be the optimum route although it wouldn't go through any settlements on the way. Having said that, I’m struggling to find a route which doesn’t involve a relatively busy pavementless road section!...

We left Kilmarnock through shopping streets and then crossed the river to walk through the park rather than along the busy main road, a short detour which I felt was worthwhile....

Walk this routeI think that the section through Carnell Estates near the middle of the route is through the private gardens and shooting grounds of an exclusive hospitality business. See https://www.carnellestates.com/. Certainly the gate at the western end appears to be closed to mere walkers, I've uploaded a screenshot from Google Maps street view....

If walking, head out towards Auchinleck from Cumnock on B7083 to just past Auchinleck Tesco on the right , turn left onto Barony Road at the intersection with Boswell Arms ( on right) and walk along a short distance of road with no footpath to an industrial estate on the left to pick up a footpath along Barony Road. The footpath continues past an entrance to Dumfries House Estate on the left, Barony A Frame on the left and Eggar wood processing plant on the right, where the footpath ends. Continue on until Barony Road make a sharp left turn, proceed straight on to single track entrance to Auchinleck House Estate. Heading from Cumnock toward Mauchline following the paved single track into Auchinleck Estate at the Barony Road, the road curves around until it enters a T junction with the Boswell Cafe. An alternate path would be to proceed through the Cafe yard and bear right winding below Auchinleck House , continuing on over a small bridge , bearing right through a metal gate then merge with the road that runs in front of the House, proceeding left. There is the possibility of walking along a path that leads through Dumfries House Estate to Cumnock past the Barony A Frame and a coal mining bing but we haven't walked it recently....
