There was a signposted section which provided clear re-routing, and we missed the path over the field just before Westoe, but the road itself was pretty quiet and easier to navigate by....

First thing to note is the high bank alongside the footpath as you leave Malton (please see picture 1), suggesting that this may be a flood plain and possibly impassable during winter floods. There were a couple of points where we tried (and managed) to stay between the river and the railway but on one point, we followed the barely viewable track marks (the footpath was very overgrown) around the field boundary into the middle to cross a stream to get into the next field and then headed back to the river in the next field - to find that the official footpath actually stuck close to the river. The road at this stage gave a much easier navigation route, the footpath seemed a little OTT....

I think the alternative route would be to continue along the road as far as Shortten Hall and then take the footpath to Tuiffit Manor and the road into Kirby Misperton, but I didn't have time to try it today....

The footpath into Westow is not signposted: turn right off Church Lane, opposite the playground and go up the field following the field headlands....
