Help connect Maidenhead

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Maidenhead’s Slow Ways.

There are plenty of opportunities to sit down on a bench along the route and the footpaths were easily recognizable on the ground. The only reason I don't give five stars to this route is the fact that the route requires walkers to cross from Broad Way across Wycombe End street....

Walking towards Winkfield Row is on a pavement which ends when you turn to Braziers Lane. The next stretch of the route leads via quiet narrow roads and lanes until it emerges at a busy Drift Road. When it reaches the Mount Skippets Farm, the route is blocked as shown on the fourth photo below. From what I see on the map it should be possible to go away from the gate and round the Mount Skippets Farm instead. After some 150m walking along a hedge, you need to turn right but there seemed to be no path visible on the ground....

Going through Braywick Park, you share part of the route with the Maidenhead ParkRun, and it can get muddy in parts after some rains. This is a beautiful part of the route where you pass Bray Marina, Oakley Court and Windsor Marina (all on your right), while Dorney Lake is on your left. Some of us have used this path for cycling before and it can get very muddy after some rainfall, and otherwise as well not suitable for wheelchairs, as it is a rugged path. Many people use this for walking this dogs, running & cycling, so it can get busy at times.! 1) Take a toilet break at the Braywick Leisure Centre (get off the track for a bit from Braywick Park) as there are no other real places you could use toilets along the way after this. As most of the route is busy, finding a spot in the bushes will not be easy!...

Down a busy main road from Slough station (although you could follow the cycle path signs down quieter streets and still end up on the Jubilee Rive Way) to the cycle path alongside the Jubilee river. At the Slough end glimpses of the river are rare through the dense riverside hedging, but the compacted gravel path is generally easy going, and even after recent torrential rain there was little mud and the puddles were shallow, this path is good for wheels, flat without gradients, but not always smooth....

I think it’s the result of the public right of way being moved from the main driveway, to the field alongside, at some point in the past, but OS maps hasn’t caught up and still shows it coming up the main drive. So … at Lillibrook Manor follow the path in the field alongside the main gravel drive, whichever direction you are coming from! Leaving Waltham St Lawrence the route now heads to White Waltham....

A very pleasant walk from Henley which heads east, following parts of The Chiltern Way and Thames Path; then turns south through landscape managed by the Berkshire College of Agriculture, to end with an urban walk into Maidenhead. I walked this route starting at the Maidenhead train station. It was just a short walk to the start in Maidenhead town centre. I thought the route through the town was pleasant, and a brief pass under an underpass led to a long stretch out of Maidenhead through really lovely parks and open spaces tucked among residential neighborhoods. At this point, the route takes you on a diversion to get to a pub, but I just skipped that and followed Winter Hill Road north. I never had to do any road walking along Winter Hill Road - paths are there, it just took a bit of searching to find them!...

An alternative is to follow the Thames Path along the Berkshire bank to Cookham Bridge and then take the footpath to Hedsor and rejoin the existing route; but an even better (shorter) alternative is to follow the National Trust path from Maidenhead town centre through Maidenhead Commons to Cookham and thence over the bridge. The route from Cookham to Beaconsfield via Hedsor and Berghers Hill is lovely; it's worth the small detour to visit Cookham and Hedsor churches....

The summary is that I don't think this route should be verified as it contains 3 sections with gated/private paths/roads, includes a long stretch down a fast road with uneven verges and misses two further opportunities for pleasant alternative walks off-road. Crossing York Road, the footpath follows the ‘Green Way’ until it tunnels under the railway line and soon arrives at Stafferton Way. The route recommends continuing along the footpath to Hibbert Road, but this leaves you on a road with a blind bend and no verge to speak of. It would be much better for the route to instead continue to follow the signposted ‘Green Way’ though the park, reaching Hibbert Road at the Braywick car park. Hibbert Road soon brings you to the main Braywick Road and passing the Esso towards Holyport. The marked route takes you on a non-connecting cut-through down a private road. Passing the roundabout you’re then walking the Ascot Road south. A narrow pavement (~60cm) on the Ascot Road takes you towards Holyport Green. Moneyrow Green is pleasant enough rural housing, but to increase ‘off-road’ walking, there’s a preferable ‘Primrose Lane’ bridleway. Emerging onto Forest Green Road, there’s a firm bridleway a few paces along the road, ‘Blackbird Lane’. ‘Blackbird Lane’ is a nicely surfaced bridleway heading down towards Drift Road. Drift Road is a straight and fast road with narrow unstable verges unsuitable for easy walking. It would be much better to cut East towards Hogoak Lane, negating most of the need to travel Drift Road, but that’s not the route we’re on. The 0.6 mile up-hill stretch of Drift Road is no fun at all. The subsequent route is along a farm road (Hawthorn Road. Instead we continue south along Weller’s Lane, meeting up with the route again at a small park, ‘Frost’s Folly’. Weller’s Lane narrows to a single track, but there’s little traffic to dodge bar the occasional car and tractor. Continuing south down Weller’s Lane, we head west along Westhatch Lane, to find our route south blocked by a gate and a farm that clearly intends not be a through-route. A short stretch through Warfield along the busier Warfield Street and Forest Road brings us to the next footpath heading south. Crossing the roundabout on Harvest Ride, we continue south on the Quelm Lane footpath....
