Connect Leominster with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Leominster to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?
Give a hike!Help connect Leominster
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Leominster’s Slow Ways.

Great day’s walk, lots of interest and - mostly - well marked paths. Pub at Orleton is perfectly placed mid route. Takes you high at times for some good views....

We tackled this long route in two parts; the first on a rainy day towards the end of an unusually rainy March. The route stays high, following a line of telegraph poles before descending into the magical Wellington Wood and down into Wellington itself. This is an excellent route but I would recommend not attempting it (at least the first part) after prolonged rainfall unless you have wellies and long legs, or know someone who does! We almost went home but the day was so beautiful and this was the last leg of a long trek, so we plotted an alternative route from Wellington which stayed on the west side of the A49 following lanes and footpaths through Burghill to enter Hereford via the Moor Park area....

I thought I knew the town well but this path was new to me, over the river at Ludford, weaving up and out of the town through some lovely old buildings, past a cemetery, eventually connecting with the main Overton road. There’s some lane walking from here, then you strike off on a footpath through fields towards Lydiatts to join a lane which runs into the Herefordshire Trail that takes you into Leominster....

On March 28th 2024 it was very flooded, the wood boggy and knee high in water. The walk through Brierley wood to the fort is fine. The final amazeballs was Wellington Wood. A lovely holloway - which is now a private road to Stone House Scotland - which you don't walk down but can see from the path alongside it to Wellington Village. From here we took an alternative route from Wellington to Hereford on the west side of the A49 via Auberrow-Portway-Burghill - which was scenic, lovely grand old houses and walled gardens. Photos below include the flooded route and the alternative via Portway (the photos without water in them are the alternative route.)...

Walking Ludlow to Leominster, all straightforward until a messy traveller's site on the edge of Moor Park School near Wheat Common Culvert. The timber yard at Broad needs some common sense navigation but I liked how it wasn't behind a high fence and that the casual coming across & walking through it, felt like the freer 1980s....

By my reckoning, the plotting is inaccurate in many places and extremely so in Orleton (swerves through gardens off any PROW), Eye (short cuts across private land at The Field and then by Eye Manor), Luston (follows a track that is not a PROW from the village to Little Bury) and at The Broad (follows bank of stream across private land at Mile End, avoiding nearby Herefordshire Trail). I have created a more accurate .gpx, uploaded it as Leolud two, trialled and reviewed it....

Negotiating the obstacle of the arable field, the route crosses the Manchester <> Cardiff railway line (photo four) to arrive at the small village of Eye. The route crosses the Manchester <> Cardiff railway line again and then another arable field crossing leads to the sad remains of the largely forgotten Kington, Leominster and Stourport canal (photo eight). Soon after, the route passes through the village of Orleton, passing alongside the Boot Inn (photo nine) and exiting the pub car park's left hand corner into an unassuming and unmarked PROW along a narrow alley (far left of photo ten). After doglegging through a residential area the route crosses a small stream, turns right and follows the brook's left bank past a sports ground and into a wood before branching left to cross a ditch to access a diagonal crossing of a large field to emerge onto the B4362 on the western edge of Comberton; careful attention to map reading is needed to find the diagonal path across the large field, although there is a nearby alternative path (not a PROW) continuing beside the brook that links up to the Herefordshire Trail (HT). The route passes between the barns on its left and the farmhouse on its right and then follows a hedge line and ridge crest to join the surfaced lane heading for Wheat Common. After turning left alongside the B4361 through Overton, the next PROW fingerpost is smothered by ivy but the route turns right off the B4361 and ascends the drive towards Overton House, crosses another drive and then continues as a path that contours across the slope before passing all-too-rare informative signage (photo fourteen) and descending gently to Mabbits Horn and the B4361 towards Ludford....

This is a good walk with some great views to the Black Mountains near Hereford. At Westhope Hill there are great views all the way from the Malverns - Bromyard Downs - Titterstone Clee Hill - Brown Clee Hill - good spot for a picnic....

Walk this routeAdding photo re OS maps and path going in different directions near the unsafe bridge - if it could go this way perhaps it's ok. Still need to investigate Motocross area more....

Lots of the route is on the Herefordshire Trail, despite this there was also lots of very overgrown areas and sections with crops making it hard to find or traverse the footpaths....

There are two safety concerns which I think make this route unsafe and actually should not be considered as part of the network :. (2) Between Brierley and Brierley Wood there was a moto cross event. The path out of Brierley Wood cuts right across the moto cross circuit. There seemed to be no wardens supervising - just a notice from the organisers saying you cross at your own risk! So I opted to go east out of the wood and try that path but again cuts right across the circuit! I'm hoping leoher2 was mistakenly reuploaded for leoher3 - but definitely a better, safer route needs to be found.....

As it was I got a fair few scratches from the footpath along the edge of the field being crowded out by wheat on one side and brambles or thistles on the other. The road sections are not unpleasant in the slightest, don't hesitate to divert onto the local minor roads if you feel that's easier. There's a campsite en route but I wild camped close by to it in an empty field - nobody is around to see you and even then I doubt they care....

I have tweaked the .gpx track for Leobro3 and plotted it to be downloaded here from Leobro4, which avoids the private property at Grantsfield and follows PROWs throughout. For full Reviews and photographs, please see Leobro3...

nichowes added Leobro four, a new walk from Leominster to Bromyard
Walk this routeI have some concerns about finer details of Leobro3, the most important being that Leobro3 crosses a short section - about 50 metres - of private property at Grantsfield, at a point where the Herefordshire Trail takes a large bight along PROWs to avoid this private property. The short section of private property links the public road at W3W price.flotation.wool to a stile onto a PROW at W3W visions.escorting.reassured. I have tweaked the .gpx track for Leobro3 and plotted it to be downloaded from Leobro4, which avoids the private property at Grantsfield and follows PROWs throughout. Leaving the A44 behind, the route follows the Herefordshire Trail (HT) uphill along an ancient route with old steps (Photo two). Emerging into an arable field the issue of standing crops was apparent in July (Photo three); this was a relatively clear path compared to other field edge paths encountered elsewhere on the route....

Neil Summersgill added Leobro three, a new walk from Leominster to Bromyard
Walk this routePlenty of places to eat and drink and either end of the route - but take food and drink as there are no shops or pubs on route. If you want to forget your worries and transport yourself back in time then this walk is for you. It follows the newly upgraded Herefordshire Trail most of the way so all stiles (and there a lot of them) are in good order....

nichowes added Leoher three, a new walk from Leominster to Hereford
Walk this routeExplored as an improvement on Leoher 2, with a better route out of Leominster and a better route in to Hereford. Problems with PROWs on Leoher three escalated during the summers of 2022 and 2023, necessitating downgrading of Leoher three to impassable. Historical Leoher three reviews are being moved to Leoher four, which is the place to find the accurate, safe route's .gpx and up-to-date reviews....

This is a good route apart from the first section from Leominster to Upper Hill, which uses too much road walking and misses out features of interest at S&A Brierley, Brierley Wood and the great hill fort that overlooks Ivington and Brierley. I will soon submit a variation of this Leoher route that includes the above....

I would love to walk this route again in the summer when the fields are full of crops and the orchards are at their best. My sense is that someone might be able to create an even better route, but this is a good Slow Ways route and a great way to get between Leominster and Kington, complete with pubs for coffee/food/drinks after 11km and 22km, which is perfect for a 28km route....
