Help connect Leeds
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Leeds’s Slow Ways.

Having walked Midlee Two and found a few problems, I made this route to iron them out and add some of my own touches. Middleton Park is a huge green space well used by the local community and dog walkers. After crossing the M621 the route goes through Holbeck, across railway tracks, and eventually passes the interesting Egyptian style building known as the Temple Works....

Jane Taylor added Midlee three, a new walk from Middleton (Leeds) to Leeds
Walk this routeThe descent on the scramble bike path in Middleton Park I found too steep, and I went and found a gentler route down the hill; the paths at the bottom of the hill were difficult to follow, the route as drawn had me trampling across the woodland to get to the lowest footpath; and the footpath that skirts the industrial estate fence had rubbish and felt a bit unpleasant, underused and isolated, the fallen tree that had to be skirted round was the last straw!...
Jane Taylor
Fantastic 5 star + route between Leeds and Harewood. Urban walking from Leeds as far as Woodhouse, where it connects with the Dales Way Link paths (Leeds to Ilkley) as far as Alwoodley....
Jane Taylor
Eventually we reach a path junction near the edge of the equestrian centre, and here we turn left. We then head left, almost immediately right then left again to find a railway bridge (no steps). We head through more industrial buildings on good pavements and signposted paths to reach Water Lane, where we take the shortcut path to the canal bridge and Granary Wharf, where we turn right, using the popular bridge over the Aire....

Walk this routeThe route is widely varied, taking the walker along a shady canal in Leeds, where it's great to chat to people fishing or walking - an insight into a slower way of travelling....
Alison Andrews
The final section on the canal kept us away from city centre road traffic but the constantly circling police helicopter overhead sure made us aware of the difference between inter-urban and urban walking....
Dave Taylor
Crossing over the river Aire, we moved onto the Leeds Liverpool canal towpath, which was lovely and well used by walkers, cyclists and narrowboaters alike....
Helen Lord
This is a walk of three sections: quiet pathways through wooded areas criss-crossing the railway, then a section of road walking followed by a delightful ending through Burley Park and then along the Leeds-Liverpool canal with the River Aire running parallel....
Sue B
Leaving Horsforth over the bridge and turning left, the walker enters a wooded footpath which follows the next to the railway line which is surprisingly pleasant with many very mature trees. The path leads the walker through the streets of Headingley, through Burley Park and eventually along the towpath of the Leeds Liverpool canal to the train station. Route finding wasn't a problem although a street map or GPS was essential....
Michael
We found a van selling coffee by the canal and there’s the Industrial Museum (pictured) with a nice garden and loos....
Kristin
The tow path was very pretty with joggers and there was an industrial museum along the way, which was laid back and interesting, a good loo stop too....
Maria Andrews
The first 40% is terrific - canal and woodland, off road. Between Stanningley Road and Farnley Ring Road (MacDonalds - reliable and welcome refreshments and toilets) is an ‘up and over’ (i.e its up a hill and then down again!) through residential streets, with some off road footpaths. The frustration is from seeing so much off road green space, woodland, but not routing through it....
Jane Taylor
After reaching the lodges, the route crosses the road and there is the option of following a footpath close to the road across fields, or walking the meandering paths through the Millenium Wood. All lead to the residential area Colton, where the route crosses Selby Road dual carriage way with safe crossings....
Monika
Not very interesting bit to walk around the Thorpe Park shopping centre which adds a lot of concrete to the walk but there are shops if you need refreshments before Garforth....
Lora
I walked on a fine Sunday, and the path is well used by cyclists, runners and walkers, a well established leisure route, providing for most part a hard surface to walk on, but there are sections of unpaved path which were muddy in places....
Jill Baggaley
Reasonable safe and accessible pathways for those with mobility issues or wheelchair users...
ANISA SALEH
Great route now including the new footbridge over the Leeds Ring Road. Very muddy in places if wet, as it had been. Some short diversions that are easily negotiated with the route....
Ross
Most of this route is lovely, along the Meanwood Valley trail and through some lovely countryside but there is a short stretch along the very busy and fast ring road which is horrible and I would not recommend....
LynneStrutt
Mostly very straightforward route, and mostly flat....
JulietP
Majority of paths good, wide and weatherproof; lots following bridleways or the 66 cycle network....
Sarah
Generally follows National Cycle Route 66 so quite a few handy signposts. Upwards of 80-90% is off-road - it's only really as you get to the final mile before the city centre that you do more roadside pavement walking. The section South of Halton Moor is worth keeping your wits about you, but most the route is otherwise safe and well traversed....
Sauntering Beancounter
Even though it's 6 miles it didn't feel like it and has an excellent stopping off point in Meanwood centre for a rest and to refuel....

This is a level route out of the city centre and skirting Temple Newsam Park to end up in the village of Garforth....
HELEN NOYES
Lovely walk, better to stay on Meanwood Valley trail and then join Eccup, rather than cutting through Alwoodly....
Simon Wilton
It is reasonably direct; the most direct alternative route is alongside busy main roads and is very unpleasant. There is a main road crossing to access the canal towpath at the Rothwell end but then it is traffic free until the centre of Leeds. Navigation is easy, as the route follows the canal towpath for most of the way....
Julie Kitchin
This is a great way to walk between Horsforth and Leeds and is far greener than many people might expect....
danravenellison
I enjoyed walking this route, but would like another route option for walking when it's dark. Most of the route would be fine, but like others... some of the woodland sections would not be appealing at night....
pilea
I think someone local could design a route through a chain of parklands to the west of this route that could make good use of Cross Flatts Park and entering Middleton Park from the north west....
danravenellison
Some points of interest: it passes under the M1 with the river and canal, and the space (and noise) is quite memorable; it passes Thwaite Mills, one of the UKs oldest working water mills; passes Clarence Dock and the Royal Armouries. As noted, there are steps to climb at Skelton Bridge...
Zak Avery
From here, the route immediately improves, passing along a wooded and surfaced path through Gotts Park and the golf club to reach the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath, which makes up about 40% of the journey. It runs alongside the River Aire, and soon passes Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills, with access directly from the towpath. Just before the canal goes under the railway, the route leaves it to cross the River Aire which it follows until the river dives down weirs and under Leeds Station....
Mary Oz
I was walking Morlee One but came across a path blockage at White Rose, so I made this route option to bypass the blocked path.. This is a really good approach route to Leeds city centre from the South-West. Eventually the route comes to the edge of a high ridge with a great view, then a steep drop down a grassy bank to a footbridge across the M621....
Jane Taylor
Very peaceful along the side of the river and canal with a long, steep set of steps in the middle near Thwaite Mill....
Ross
Unfortunately there is a new fence which blocks the path by the White Rose Office Park (definitive footpath Morley 33 on Open Street Map). The route needs reworking to find an alternative way through this area....
Jane Taylor
Rendering route complete route unsuitable for wheelchairs or non-traditional bicycles....
Alteredbeast
It's a safe route and would feel fine walking it on my own (but maybe not in the evening through the woods as a solo woman). The route given was accurate and I'd be happy to walk it again....
Nic
Shops, cafe, woodland path, reservoir wildlife and deer parkland. A great way to walk to Harewood. Four starts only because it has steps and stiles....
Ross
Wonderful wooded sections with facilities in the middle section near Meanwood park. This route is updated to avoid the Dale Way link path blockage in Meanwood Woods....
Ross
From the high level information used at the initial route selection it was probably difficult to see that the two paths did not match in elevation in the wood area to the North of Roundhay park....
Ross
A decent route between Leeds City Centre and Pudsey. The western half of the route is mostly on urban residential roads in Pudsey, Farnley and Armley, which is very direct even if not very exciting. Crossing Stanningley bypass at the suggested point isn't the most fun, so it might be worth taking a 500m detour to cross at the lights....
Sean Stayte
Wonderful wooded sections with facilities in the middle section near Meanwood....
